More about us - Western Sussex is an acute trust with three hospitals; Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s in Chichester provide emergency, inpatient and outpatient care; and Southlands in Shoreham-by-Sea provides outpatient care and day surgery. Since April 2017, the senior leadership team has also managed neighbouring trust Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals.

We are seeking to employ experienced Band 5 nurses to join our Emergency Department team at St Richards Hospital. We are part of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which is a trust that has been rated ‘Outstanding’ with the CQC, and where our staff survey results show that people love to work here!

St Richards A&E currently sees approximately 65,000 patients per year, with 25% of patients we see being children. We are a designated Trauma unit and have been rated as an "Outstanding Department" by the CQC. We have a robust Practice Development team with a strategic vision which is supported at director level. We are a receiving unit for Stroke calls and have trained our nurses to become specialist assessors for stroke thrombolysis and have demonstrated how the care we provide really impacts on patient outcomes.

Our Paediatric department lies within our main footprint and is staffed by senior paediatric nurses who have developed a rotation programme for staff with a specialist interest in developing their paediatric skills further and offer a potential rotation to the paediatric wards for career development. Our dedicated Paediatric Area provides a separate waiting area and playroom with 3 cubicles and further assessment and triage rooms and we have paediatric wards on site.

We have an 18 bedded majors with a view to develop and expand further and have recently upgraded our resuscitation area to manage the current pandemic along with development of a new Red Assessment area.

The Emergency department has undergone modernisation and a change in leadership, both nursing and medical and we are working towards new and exciting projects to improve patient flow. Western Sussex Hospitals aims to empower and develop staff through utilising the Patient First methodology and we would love to hear from enthusiastic, motivated nurses, with excellent communication skills and a vision for the future. This is a fast paced and at times challenging environment and can be hard work, however, being able to deliver great care is something we pride ourselves on and strive to deliver as a team.

Our Clinical Decision’s Unit has recently been refurbished and has four beds and four ambulatory chairs which enables us to maintain flow through the department and strong links with the Emergency Floor results in timely transfers and an improved patient experience.

We have the potential to offer permanent CDU nursing posts if you feel you would love to try A&E but want to take your time easing into the role. We have strong links with our mental health liaison service and are keen to hear from applicants with a special interest in Mental Health, or indeed, dual trained nurses.

We have an established induction and rotational programme designed to support and developing all nurses to become confident and effective Emergency Nurses with the opportunity to grow and flourish.

Applicants must have a minimum of 6 months acute hospital experience or equivalent front line experience and should be prepared to work a variety of shifts including internal rotation, weekends/nights and bank holidays. We currently have a shift pattern of 12.5hr days and nights.
