We are located in a bespoke, purpose-built hospital on the world-class Cambridge Biomedical Campus, with administrative services based in Huntingdon.

In October 2019, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) announced the hospital was ‘outstanding’ overall and across all five of the CQC domains; safe, caring, effective, responsive, and well-led - this is the first time an NHS hospital trust has achieved an ‘outstanding’ rating across the five key questions.

The time commitment is expected to be 3 days a month for an initial 3 year fixed term contract.

Royal Papworth Hospital is the UK’s largest cardiothoracic hospital and the country’s main heart and lung transplant centre.  We have an extraordinary commitment to delivering the highest levels of clinical quality and providing the best standards of personalised care possible to our patients.

2019 was a historic year for Royal Papworth Hospital.  After many years of planning we achieved our long-term vision of moving to our new hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.  Now looking to the future the Trust has drawn up its strategy for 2020-2025 which will guide our work for the next five years. 

Our strategy was developed with involvement from our staff, patients and partners and it will help us build on our strengths, address our challenges, and realise the potential of our new hospital and our exceptional staff.

We treat over 22,000 inpatient/day cases and over 93,000 outpatients each year from across the UK.  Royal Papworth has nearly 1,900 staff and an annual budget of over £150 million.  Our new location on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus will give us a much greater opportunity to work with other research organisations and hospitals to bring new treatments to our patients more quickly.

We seek a Non-executive Director able to demonstrate recent substantial experience at senior or Board level and for this appointment.  We are looking for a candidate with significant and successful commercial and it would be desirable if they had recent and relevant financial experience.  The ideal candidate will already have board level experience and previous experience serving or working in the health or public sector.

The Trust Board is keen to improve its diversity to reflect the communities and workforce we serve. You must embody the values set out in the NHS constitution, support the Trust ethos of exceptional service delivery to patients, and embrace the governance challenges arising in a Foundation Trust where the Council of Governors holds the NEDs, individually and collectively, to account for the Board’s performance.

As a Board member, you will work alongside Executive and Non-executive Directors to constructively challenge and support the development of proposals on strategies, scrutinise the performance of management in meeting agreed goals and satisfy yourself that financial controls and systems for risk management are robust and effective.
