Royal Lancaster Infirmary Emergency Department see’s approximately 5000 patient each month, People with mental ill health are 3 times more likely to present to A&E than the general population. People with known mental ill health are five times more likely to be admitted to acute hospitals primarily for physical health reasons; people with mental ill health had 3.6 times more potentially preventable emergency admissions.

As a Mental Health Nurse with the Emergency Department you will be able work to better integrate mental and physical health; Supporting Adult Registered Nurse and Patients in Triage Assessment and Majors (Clinical Assessment). You will work in partnership with acute liaison services and our mental health providers to provide high quality ongoing care; integrating physical and mental health in patients presenting with;

  • Alcohol & Drug Issues
  • Deliberate Self-Harm
  • Familiar FACES (Frequent Attenders)
  • Overdose
  • Suicidal Ideation
  • Vulnerable Adults

You will also be providing high quality on-going care to patients awaiting admission to mental health beds, ensuring their needs are meet when initial care takes place in an acute setting; we are about to build a new mental health suit within the Emergency Department providing mental health support bays to ensure our patients are cared for a more suitable environment.

We are a supportive multi-professional and multi-agency team working with our integrated Children’s and Young Peoples Nurses, Adult Mental Health Liaison Team and Hospital Ambulance Liaison Officers along with specialist Nurses who in-reach.

The Emergency Department supports lifelong learning and development and is committed to the continuing development of our trained nurses developing the wide portfolio of clinical skills required to work in the Emergency Department. You will have access to a dedicated Practice Educator who will support your development; along-side our Clinical Leader for Mental Health in Emergency Care.

We are looking for suitably qualified nurses, however post registration experience is not essential we offer a preceptorship program for newly qualified nurse who would like a career in emergency nursing, all new staff have a period of supernumery working and all staff have a mentor to coach you through your first 12 months.

A number of posts are available, working a rolling shift pattern of 07.00 - 20:00 or 17:00 - 02:00; initially we don't expect night shift working patterns, however as we develop our mental health service this may become a requirement. We are seeking individuals who are open to new ways of working and would like to contribute to the integration of mental and physical health.

Anyone newly appointed to the trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff). This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the role and working environment.
