Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist – Molecular Lead (BMS2)

Fixed Term Contract 1 Year

Full Time 37.5 hours per week

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust are looking to appoint a Senior Biomedical Scientist – Molecular Lead to join the dynamic and evolving team within the Microbiology Department at Watford General Hospital.

The Microbiology department is UKAS accredited and for training by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).We serve a population of approximately half a million and the laboratory processes over 420,000 tests per year providing a comprehensive diagnostic service including Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Infectious Disease Serology and Molecular testing. The department uses the Clinisys WinPath LIMS system and Gael Q-Pulse Quality Management System.

You will be the Lead BMS for the Molecular Lab, a busy, new COVID-19 PCR testing lab where you will train and supervise staff working during routine periods as well as out of hours. Your team will be responsible for the receipt, sorting, processing of COVID-19 swabs using various molecular platforms to detect SARs CoV-2 RNA. You will also participate in the referral of swabs to external labs for processing as appropriate.

Experience as a qualified BMS is required for this role. Experience on running and managing molecular platforms for the detection of SARS CoV-2 RNA or similar would be desirable. You will have excellent manual dexterity and technical skills and the ability to work on your own initiative or as part of a team. You should be able to train, supervise and lead staff in running various molecular platforms for the detection of COVID-19 RNA or antibodies and in troubleshooting and resolution of non-conformances. Experience and skills in maintaining and troubleshooting LIMS and associated IT works are desirable.

As a BMS2 – Molecular Lead you are expected to be methodical, organised and flexible in your approach to your duties. The ability to prioritise tasks together with effective communication and team leading skills are essential. The successful candidate will also be required to participate in the weekend, Bank Holiday and out of hours on-call rota.
