An opportunity has arisen for an HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist, to join the Clinical Microbiology team at Leicester Royal Infirmary to assist in the delivery of a quality-driven, patient-focused clinical diagnostic service. We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Clinical Scientist with experience in molecular virology to complement our existing team of two Clinical Scientists and one Consultant Clinical Scientist.

The successful applicant will have an interesting and varied role supporting the Clinical Microbiology service by undertaking development, innovation and research projects, with an emphasis on molecular diagnostics in Virology. In particular this will involve the evaluation and validation/verification of assays in preparation for diagnostic service delivery. The successful candidate will be expected maintain an up-to-date knowledge of key developments in clinical microbiology and diagnostics in order to drive continued improvement of the service.

The post holder will also undertake specialised analyses of clinical samples using various established and novel technologies, interpreting and reporting results of these investigations and contribute to the department’s quality and health and safety processes as appropriate.

Support will be provided for professional development, particularly in the pursuit of research funding, but at present, enrolment on the Higher Specialist Scientific Training programme will not be considered for this post, due to existing training commitments in the department. Training requirements for the post-holder will be reviewed at regular intervals as part of the annual appraisal process.

 

The Clinical Microbiology Department

The Clinical Microbiology service is a comprehensive medical microbiology and virology service, handling in excess of 700 000 microbiology and virology samples per year for a population of over 1 million people. We are active in supporting infection prevention, control & diagnostics of a wide range of infections. We have a dynamic and progressive service with experienced Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists, managers and Consultants. The department has a range of diagnostic equipment, including QIAsymphony nucleic acid extractors, Rotor-Gene and Aus Diagnostics High-Plex thermocyclers, Hologic Panther, Mobidiag Aplidiag easy, Novodiag and GeneXpert Infinity NAAT instruments, serology analysers including Siemens Centaur and Diasorin Liaison, BacT Alert and MGIT culture systems, VITEK and MALDI-TOF identification systems as well as traditional bacterial and fungal culture methods.

The Microbiology service is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189:2012. Teaching, training, audit, research and development are actively encouraged and pursued within the department. The department has good links with local universities, in particular with The University of Leicester, with successful research collaborations and delivery of academic teaching sessions.

This post is currently based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, however work at other sites within University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust may be required.
