The Department of Clinical Microbiology at the Royal Cornwall Hospital (RCH) operates as a friendly and cohesive team providing a full range of diagnostic and clinical services to the acute and community sectors in Cornwall. The relative isolation and large population served by the department means that a larger and more complete range of services is offered than in many similarly sized units. The Infection Prevention and Control service is housed in the laboratory.

The department is housed in a spacious, modern, purpose-built facility. It processes around 375,000 specimens annually and serves a population of 410,000 people. Over recent years we have invested in IT, automated technology and molecular diagnostics and high quality staff to run them. A replacement pan-pathology managed laboratory service started in June 2019, ensuring continuing local NHS management of the service. Pathology in Truro is part of the South 1 NHSI Pathology Network and works closely and collaboratively the other 4 Pathology services across this area.

The post is offered full time as 10 PAs, with an additional PA available by agreement with the Trust.
