TRANSPLANT AND CARDIO-THORACIC SURGEON


Applications are invited to join one of the largest cardiothoracic surgical departments in the UK and one of the most active in intra-thoracic transplantation worldwide.

This is a fulltime substantive post. The workload will be cardiac surgery and a specialist interest in Transplantation. The post-holder will be required to join the on-call rota for transplantation and organ retrieval, and may be needed to undertake some general cardiac surgery on-call. The rota frequency is subject to change depending on the configuration of the service and can be discussed prior to interview.

The successful applicant should expect good operative exposure and involvement in clinics, MDT, trauma and ward work.

Royal Papworth Hospital is an internationally recognised specialist heart and lung hospital that has recently moved in to a purpose built new hospital on the Cambridge biomedical campus. Clinical services include the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients in four principal areas: cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, chest medicine and advanced heart and lung failure, including transplantation. We have an established reputation for innovative clinical developments underpinned by substantial research, development and education. Surgical training was ranked as the best in the UK in the last GMC trainee survey.

Papworth Hospital is the largest adult cardiothoracic centre in the UK with over 2000 cardiac surgical procedures performed per year. Our Transplantation Programme is the largest in the UK with the largest DCD heart programme worldwide. Papworth also deliver a National Retrieval Service which is one of the most versatile covering both Adult and Paediatric retrieval.

Thoracic surgery undertakes 650 procedures per year. This is expected to rapidly increase as we have been allocated 60% more operating time and have theatre lists 5-6 days/week. We provide local cardiothoracic services for the Eastern region and also specialist national services including, ventricular assist devices, pulmonary endarterectomy and ECMO. Papworth’s cardiology services include primary angioplasty, structural intervention, pacing and electrophysiology, imaging and heart failure. The respiratory department includes oncology, infection, fibrosis, sleep and general services.

Applicants must possess the MBBS or equivalent, FRCS (CTh) or equivalent and be on the UK Specialist Register in Cardiothoracic Surgery or within 6 months of completion of specialist training or recognised equivalent EU/EA qualification. Substantial experience of cardiothoracic surgery with a specialist interest/experience in Transplantation is essential.
