The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit enthusiastic, motivated individuals who want a future career as a Pharmacy Technician.

We are a busy pharmacy department offering a diverse and complex range of functions and activities including: Dispensary, ward based clinical activities, logistics, stores and procurement, clinical trials, aseptic preparation and medicines information. We have an automated robotic dispensing and stock supply system.

Successful candidates will undertake an apprenticeship that will provide them with all of the necessary skills and knowledge to complete the new Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians. Students who successfully complete the apprenticeship will be eligible to apply to register as a qualified Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

The apprenticeship involves on the job training and a requirement to attend college on day release. The course has a blended learning approach offering a combination of work based and distance learning with ongoing and end point assessments and a requirement to build a portfolio of evidence. Emphasis is placed on professionalism and person-centered care therefore it is important that students can communicate effectively with patients and work as part of the ward based multidisciplinary team, to ensure that patients achieve the maximum benefit from their medicines. Students must be able to make their own travel arrangements to ensure attendance at any required study days.

The role of the trainee pharmacy technician is demanding and requires a high level of commitment and motivation from the post holder in order to meet set deadlines and manage their work/ study/life balance effectively to enable completion of the required learning and achieve the level of competence required. (Participating in the departments 7 day working provision including Bank Holidays)

Career opportunities following completion of apprenticeship and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council include medicines management roles, aseptic preparation, education and training, clinical trials, homecare medicines, procurement, primary care and many more.

As a minimum you must have passed 4 GCSE’s (or the equivalent level) at Grade 4 or above in the following subjects: -

  • Maths
  • English Language (English Literature or English Speaking and Listening are not acceptable)
  • Biology* or Human Biology
  • Chemistry*

(*or Dual Award Science covering the above two science subject areas. NB Dual Award Applied Science at level 2 will not be acceptable)

It is important that you meet the criteria and grade for the qualifications as detailed above. Your application will be rejected if you do not list in the ‘Qualifications’ section the qualifications and grades obtained that clearly identify the level of Maths, English, Chemistry & Biology achieved. If Dual Award Science was achieved state “Dual Award Science” and not just “Science” as your application may be rejected.

Successful applicants for this post will be asked to undertake a short aptitude test on the day of the interview.
