Job Summary

The Ambulance Radio Programme (ARP) is hosted by the South Western Ambulance Service. It delivers radio based mobile communications services to all English Ambulance Trusts.ARP is now working with a National cross government programme entitled the Emergency Services Mobile Communications Programme (ESMCP) which has been established with the remit of delivering the future national mobile communication capabilities for all emergency services. ESMCP is hosted by the home office and has representation from all the emergency services. Two new programmes have been established Control Room Solution (CRS) and Mobile Data Vehicle Solutions (MDVS). Both Programmes will need to closely adhere to the timescales of the ESMCP delivery to ensure critical communications are maintained.


We have a new and exciting opportunity to join the Ambulance Radio Programme! We currently have a vacancy to join the Testing Team as a Technical Testing Assurance Analyst. This role is home based. The ARP Technical Assurance Support will work within a national organisation and will provide technical support and assistance to all the Ambulance Trust’s throughout the life of the ARP service contract. The post holder will be responsible for providing expert testing input and support to Ambulance Trusts on ARP related programmes and the associated system dependencies along with other elements of the ARP in Life Service. In addition, the post holder will be support thorough testing of system design and function against pre-specified design documentation and test scripts.


Key Responsibilities/Duties of this Role will Include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Providing test and technical guidance and assurance on TETRA terminals, ICCS and BAU systems
  • Undertaking technical planning and support of the annual terminal upgrade activities in association with the Technical lead and Trust
  • Participating in full suite of test activities including non-functional, conformance, performance, integration and full end to end functional and scenario testing including issue, risk and problem management.
  • Proofing and assisting on the development of test documentation including test plans and test scripts.
  • Evaluation and testing of new products, providing advice, guidance and support to ARP and stakeholders.
  • Acting as a focal point for system testing within the various product streams and answering technical queries
  • Becoming the in-house expert on the various equipment that reside within a product workstream
  • Assisting the Test Manager, Technical lead(s) and Project Manager(s) to undertake support during transitional / migration phases
  • Undertake Trust Security audits for BAU / new systems and feedback to the Regional Service Managers / Technical Lead
  • Technical assurance of operational solution for given requirements, with the ability to provide reasonably accurate estimates for projects.


Communication and Relationship Skills:

The role requires well developed communications and relationship management skills. The post holder will be required to maintain relationships with a range of suppliers, Ambulance Trusts, the wider NHS and other emergency services. ARP delivers critical communications to the Ambulance service and hence the discussion of issues related to its delivery may be sensitive and contentious and will take place in a highly emotive atmosphere. Resolution may require failings to be identified within the in-life team and external organisations, the recognition of such failings and the agreement of the actions required to address them can take place in a hostile, antagonistic and highly emotive atmosphere. Facilitation of strong collaborative working between the separate teams delivering the ARP service to specific Trusts including Ambulance Trust staff and suppliers to ensure that the service is successfully delivered shall be one of the post holder’s key responsibilities.


Education/Qualifications required for the role include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Degree post graduate qualification or equivalent level of experience.
  • Membership of professional bodies such as itSMF, BCS.
  • Formal qualification in Service Continuity Management.
  • PRINCE2 Foundation
  • ITIL Foundation v3
  • ISEB or ISTQB certified
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in testing communication technologies in an operational environment.
  • Production and maintenance of test documentation
  • Understanding of Tetra radio configuration and programming software
  • Understanding of the Airwave Tetra network and the Code of Practices
