The Department of Clinical Chemistry comprises a team of staff who are committed to delivering an efficient, high quality diagnostic service. It is a busy, friendly department. We have an excellent reputation as a specialist laboratory and provide a comprehensive analytical biochemistry service along with regional newborn screening and metabolic biochemistry.

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join us as Head of Department and Director of Newborn Screening. Applications are invited from individuals who are State Registered as a ‘Clinical Scientist’ and with at least 10 years of experience. Applicants must be ‘Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists’ or at least be close to being awarded this title.

As Director of Newborn Screening you will have full clinical, scientific and managerial charge of the Regional Newborn Screening service and Biochemical Genetics Service to the population of South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, Bassetlaw, North Lincolnshire, South Humberside, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

As a Consultant in Clinical Chemistry you will be offering the highest level of scientific skill and expertise over the full range of services, and advice and guidance to the laboratory staff and referring clinicians for the provision of the highest quality of service to patients.

The laboratory is also involved in organising and assessing some external quality assurance schemes relating to the detection of inborn errors of metabolism in Europe and the UK.

Participation in the out of hours Consultant on-call rota is required.

The post is being advertised as full-time hours but applications are invited from individuals wanting to work less hours. Please state clearly in the Supporting Information your preference regarding working hours.

The Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is currently one of five Trusts within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research and development in collaboration with Academia and Industry to improve health and innovation in the region and provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff.

In line with other NHS Organisations in the Yorkshire and Humber Region a successful candidate appointed into a post within this Trust will be required to pay the DBS check fee (£45). This is customarily payable over 4 months as a salary deduction once employed by the Trust. If you receive a conditional offer letter, complete your DBS application and later withdraw from the recruitment process, an invoice will be raised via the Trust's finance department to recoup the outlay.
