  • For posts on PHE Civil Service terms and conditions, on appointment the salary is normally the minimum point (see salary range above). Given the nature of the work of PHE, as a Category 1 department, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. You may also be required to work at any other location, within reasonable travelling distance of your permanent home address, in line with the provisions set out in your contract of employment.


An opportunity has arisen to join the Field Service South East and London (FS SEaL) team as a Senior Epidemiology Scientist (Grade 7) on a permanent basis.

The post holder will manage the delivery of gastrointestinal infections surveillance outputs. They will support more junior colleagues in further improving and ensuring data quality of these reports and conducting ad hoc analyses.

They will also provide senior scientific support to the epidemiological investigation of incidents and outbreaks of infectious diseases, supporting local Health Protection Teams and in collaboration with other partners. This will include leading and managing the technical and analytical aspects of epidemiological outbreak investigations.

The post holder will also take a lead role in public health scientific analyses and writing reports on specific projects, regular and ad hoc publications and peer reviewed publications.

Candidates with strong technical skills in the use of statistical / database / mapping / web tools such as Stata and/or R are desired. Where necessary, additional training will be provided to support the post-holder to deliver their duties.
