Due to an exciting joint working project of Oncology Services in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals (NUTH) and North Cumbria Integrated Care (NCIC), a new post of matron for Oncology in North Cumbria has been created to coincide with the construction of a new building to house oncology services on the Carlisle Infirmary site, providing the most up-to-date equipment with which to deliver outstanding care to patients.

The post holder will be employed by NUTH but will primarily work within NCIC to lead and develop Oncology Services, which are currently delivered from Reiver House on the Carlisle Infirmary site, until the opening of the new Oncology Centre, and within West Cumberland Hospital. It is anticipated that the service, and the staff employed by NCIC working in Oncology Services will be transferred to NUTH in 2021, at a date to be confirmed.

The Matron is required to act as guardian for professional nursing behaviours, accountability and standards for the day case and outpatient functions within the Oncology Services. The post holder will be required to ensure the provision of safe and effective patient care, including provision of robust systems in place to monitor and maintain these standards.

Effective management of the nursing resource is a key responsibility of the Matron, along with providing appropriate support, supervision and leadership to the senior nursing team.

The post holder will be required to have exceptional communication skills in order to articulate detailed information, resolve patient or carer complaints and provide specialist advice to the senior nursing team where required.

A background in Cancer Services and Clinical Haematology would be advantageous but not essential.
