Registered Clinical Scientist - Genetics

Job Reference: 269-SFT5356-C

Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust
Salisbury District Hospital, Salisbury
£38,890 - £44,503 per ann

Voted by the Sunday Times as the best place to live in Britain, Salisbury is an attractive place to live and work and really gives you the best of everything. With easy access to London and local airports, Salisbury also has one of the 31 UNESCO world heritage sites in the UK in the form of Stonehenge and in addition boasts a number of museums and famous landmarks which are well worth a visit. Alternatively, the city of Southampton is only a short train or car journey away or if you prefer the sea, Bournemouth is also accessible.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time, permanent HCPC registered (Band 7) Clinical Scientist (Band 7) or pre-registration (Band 6) Clinical Scientist to join our innovative and dedicated Oncology Genomics team.

The Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory is a key member of the Genomic Local Laboratory Network (GLLN) working with the Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH) for the Wessex, Oxford and West Midlands Genomic Consortium, serving 11 million people across the region.

We are a UKAS accredited laboratory at the forefront of NHS Genomic Medicine, providing state-of-the-art integrated diagnostic testing services for the diagnoses of rare disease and cancer at a national and international level. The laboratory has a close association with the Wessex Clinical Genetics Service, the University of Southampton and hosts high profile basic academic research.

The successful candidate will join our diagnostic team who are committed to patient-centred service provision through accurate and timely data analysis, interpretation and reporting of genomic information following karyotyping, FISH and molecular genetic testing, with the highest quality of attention to detail, to ensure that patient results are delivered in a safe and efficient way in order to direct patient management and therapeutic decisions. As whole genome sequencing (WGS) and molecular karyotyping are becoming available for certain clinical indications, the laboratory is actively involved in developing procedures for the interpretation of WGS data and in implementing SNP-array for MDS.

The successful candidate will have a sound knowledge of laboratory genetics, ideally with experience in oncology. They will have the ability to critically analyse and interpret scientific data, and compile comprehensive, integrated genomic reports. In addition, excellent communication skills are essential, to ensure effective multi-disciplinary team-working and the communication of complex information to service users.

We invite applications from candidates who have or are willing to work towards HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist with Cytogenetic or Molecular Genetic experience.

We offer a stimulating and dynamic working environment, and a wide range of learning and development opportunities. For pre-registration scientists, we have developed a work-based learning program which is formally assessed through a number of different modalities within the department.

We are looking for employees who aspire to excellence, share our values and can play a crucial role in our on-going achievements.

Appointment to AFC band 7 or 6 would be dependent on qualifications, experience and HCPC registration.
