The Role

Department of Anaesthetics

CONSULTANT ANAESTHETIST (General – with Interest in Obstetrics)

Applications are invited for the above replacement post in the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. This post will be the sixth consultant with responsibility for the Labour Ward. This is a general post, with a specialist interest in obstetric anaesthesia. We have a purpose built Women’s and Children’s Unit. There are 4,500-5,000 deliveries per year, with a caesarean section rate of 25%. There are currently 4 elective caesarean section lists a week, as well as daily labour ward and emergency maternity theatre cover. There is also a weekly high risk antenatal anaesthetic clinic. Consultants with an obstetric interest provide cover for 10 labour ward sessions each week. This is achieved by working flexibly as a group.

We are a busy district general hospital serving the East Hertfordshire and West Essex communities. The hospital has 11 theatres, including 4 Day Case theatres in a dedicated unit, and a Critical Care Unit/High Dependency Unit with a capacity of 11 patients. The department provides anaesthetic services across a wide range of surgical specialties including orthopaedics, general surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology, vascular, day-case ENT, ophthalmics and paediatrics. We also run anaesthetic high risk clinics and undertake cardiopulmonary exercise testing onsite. We also have an acute pain service supported by our pain team nurses. On call commitments are currently on a 1:8 basis. The role includes duty consultant of the week at the same frequency.

The successful applicant will play an active part in the new structured modular training programme, both for anaesthesia, obstetrics and intensive care. The consultants also provide teaching and supervision to trainee anaesthetists allocated for CEPOD and elective lists.

There is the opportunity to become involved in obstetric multi-disciplinary simulation with our on-site simulation suite and to become part of our active education department. We have an onsite Clinical Skills Laboratory with simulation facilities. The close links with the nearby Anglia Ruskin University offer the opportunity to develop postgraduate qualifications in medical leadership and education. The new medical school in our catchment area offers potential for educators to develop their experience.

You must possess full registration with the General Medical Council with a license to practice and it is essential that you hold Specialist Registration in Anaesthesia, or be eligible for CCT within 6 months of the interview, CESR or European Community Rights. The post is full-time, comprising 10 programmed activities. Should the successful candidate wish, an additional programmed activity may be offered.
