We are seeking a Clinical Psychologist part time to provide psychological input to two areas within paediatric endocrinology at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), namely, obesity and differences in sexual development (DSD).

The post is configured as 0.3wte for DSD and 0.2wte for obesity. The focus of the sessions for obesity is principally to establish need and to contribute to developing a service model for psychology input into paediatric obesity.

This post represents an exciting opportunity to take a lead in establishing the role for psychology in both of these interesting clinical fields. Neither of these specialist areas currently has psychology input.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Child Clinical Psychology department consists of 20 clinical psychologists and three admin staff as well as trainees and honorary assistants. We are a friendly and supportive team with good arrangements for supervision and further learning. The Child Psychology team provides a strong base from which we can give our best to the children and families we meet, as well as to our multidisciplinary colleagues. As a team we place a strong emphasis on self-care and on supporting one another. This means that there are clear job plans and people are encouraged to maintain a good work/life balance. The positive working atmosphere and the opportunities for development mean we have a long track record of retaining staff within the team.

Although obesity and DSD do not have any other psychology input at the moment, the endocrinology MDT has well-established relationships with our psychologists who work in diabetes. It is envisaged that there will be close connections between you and the diabetes psychologists as part of an endocrinology ‘mini-team’. There is a great deal of openness within the wider team in supporting one another and in sharing information and knowledge.

You will be supported by the paediatric endocrine team with opportunity to attend regional meetings in DSD and obesity. CPD in these areas and others will be supported.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

For both parts of the role, you will establish connections with the endocrinology leads for these specialisms and will also make links with key psychology colleagues in these areas nationally. For the DSD role, the post-holder will provide assessment and therapeutic intervention applying a range of psychological models in a flexible way, working directly with children, young people and their families and also indirectly through liaison and consultation with the multidisciplinary teams and other professionals. There is the opportunity to attend the DSD MDT clinic. In the obesity role, you will be required to develop an appropriate service model for the provision of a psychology service into obesity. You will also be expected to develop a group-based intervention, adapting existing materials, for families where the children are at risk of morbid obesity.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Prior experience of working in a varied paediatric setting as a clinical psychologist is essential. It is also essential that you work well as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will be supported by the paediatric endocrine team to develop an understanding and knowledge of DSD and childhood obesity as well as opportunity to attend CPD.

It is not expected that you will necessarily have prior expertise in either DSD or childhood obesity. You will be supported by friendly and dynamic teams in psychology and paediatric endocrinology.
