Southampton Children’s Hospital Outpatients Department currently has a vacancy for a full time Paediatric trained band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse.

This role will require you to support the band 7 department manager in ensuring clinics are fully staffed and managed to run effectively taking into account requirements for each speciality. You will be required to liaise with clinicians and families dealing with enquiries, complaints and any other queries that may arise. You will be managing a team of staff, ensuring all appraisals, training and performance is monitored.


The Children’s Outpatient department sees over 55,000 children a year, covering a number of different specialties such as Orthopaedics, Surgery, Cardiac and Medical conditions with specialist clinics for those suffering from asthma, allergies, skin problems and diabetes to name a few. The department is open from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday and along with clinics has a specialist venepuncture service.

The department also runs the same day elective surgical pre-admission service, supporting patients in seeing the surgical team in preparation for their operations, this ensures all pre-op tests, observations and paperwork are completed in a timely manner and all golden patients are in theatres for the start of each operating list.


You will be responsible for assisting the Senior Sister in the management of the ward/unit over a 24-hour period, ensuring high standards of care appropriate to the child/young person are maintained, and available resources are utilised effectively.

You will be assisting in the day to day management and organisation of the Outpatients clinics as required, demonstrating clinical expertise and acting as a role model within Paediatric setting.


  • You will have post qualifying experience in a relevant specialty which includes working in an acute paediatric environment.

  • You will be expected to show good co-ordination and leadership skills

  • Evidence of supporting staff
