Close links with neighbouring trusts have been fostered through the East Midlands Medical Microbiology Forum.

The post is based at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, on a green field site two miles east of the centre of Chesterfield, on the edge of the Peak District a place of outstanding beauty with good facilities for walking, cycling and days out. Closely situated near the M1, Chesterfield has excellent road and rail links to the rest of the country. It is positioned close to 3 large cities with teaching hospitals (Sheffield, Nottingham & Derby). Train services to London are frequent, taking approximately 2 hours and terminating at St Pancras international.

The hospital has approximately 550 inpatient beds, and serves a population of approximately 350,000 people. The Trust currently offers the full range of District General Hospital services and a designated cancer unit, with a new cancer unit due to open on-site this year.

As of July 2018, the laboratory service has become part of Derbyshire Pathology, a collaborative network comprising pathology services across Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Royal Derby Hospital. Consultant input into laboratory management is provided through a service-level agreement. The Chesterfield laboraotry processes 327,879 tests per annum (2015 data). The testing repertoire includes general microbiology, mycology, respiratory and enteric bacteriology, TB and serology.
