It is an amazing and exciting time for Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust!

We are a large Integrated Care Organisation serving the large and diverse communities from West Bromwich to Central Birmingham. The Trust includes City Hospital (including the Birmingham Midland Eye Centre), Sandwell Hospital, Rowley Regis Hospital and Leasowes Intermediary Care Centre. We also house a number of community wards on our main sites and have begun partnership working with an expanding number of GP practices within West Bromwich and West Birmingham.

We have recently launched our world class Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system – Unity, across the whole organisation. This is based on the Cerner platform and incorporates full Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration and we are one of the few Trusts in the country with full closed loop medicines administration. We have already completed the first phase of installation of our automated medicines cabinets (Pyxis) and smart key cupboard locks (Abloy) that complements our existing Pharmacy robot. Within a year, we will be looking to install automated cabinets in the remaining clinical areas to make us an organisation ready for fully clinically focussed and integrated automation for medicines as we move to out new state of the art hospital – Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in 2022. This will become the largest Urgent Care focussed hospital in Europe when it opens.

The Pharmacy Department has recently seen some changes and due to the strength and growth of our clinical trials. From this, an exciting opportunity has presented for a Specialist Technician in Clinical Trials. This is an important position within our large, diverse and friendly Pharmacy team. Research and development is embedded within the Trust and you will support the 2020 vision of increasing the amount of research available for our patients. It has been proven that patients cared for in research active NHS Trusts have better clinical outcomes.

You will be responsible for rotating through our key areas, including aseptic services, to ensure the smooth operational planning and delivery of clinical trials to our patients. This will involve supervising and ensuring workload is completed in a timely manner to a high standard. This will be in conjunction with our other band 5 specialist technicians in clinical trials to form a cohesive and strong team. You will be supported by a strong leadership within the Pharmacy trials team directly reporting to our Clinical Trials Lead Technician. You will also support the wider team through activities through dispensaries and ward based work appropriate to your grade.

Working pattern will be 37.5 hours per week. Late duty, weekends, bank holidays may be part of the post.

If you are the person that can meet these challenges, then informal enquiries may be directed to Lindsay Hough (Lead Technician – Clinical Trials) on 0121 507 3639.
