Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow (SpR) in Respiratory Medicine. The post is available from August 2020 until August 2021. This is an exciting new opportunity in training within respiratory medicine in Wales, and looks to attract trainees keen on developing an interest in respiratory medicine with opportunity to develop a sub-specialist interest in respiratory failure and Non Invasive Ventilation.

The post is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, South Wales. The Royal Gwent Hospital is one of the busiest acute teaching hospitals in the country with over 800 beds and 290 acute medical beds. We have over 200 acute NIV admissions per annum and have an expanding domiciliary service with currently over 150 patients.

The post holder will work directly with a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Royal Gwent Hospital in assessing and treating patients with acute respiratory failure and those requiring non-invasive ventilation. Although this is not an approved training post, the applicant will receive the same training and experience in line with existing training at CMT / ST level in Respiratory medicine dependant on the experience of the applicant. The posts would ideally suit someone who has some experience in Respiratory Medicine and wishes to look at developing a sub specialist interest in respiratory failure / NIV. However, it is not essential and the work commitments of the team will be reviewed and adjusted to that of a more junior or more senior level but both of the potential job timetables provide excellent experience in Respiratory Failure / NIV.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop advanced skills in NIV to support the NIV inpatient unit (4 bedded high care unit within the respiratory floor). In addition they will be involved in A&E and Medical Assessment Unit cover for suspected and confirmed NIV / Respiratory Failure patients as well as new inpatient referrals. The successful applicant will review new NIV admissions to the Unit and be actively involved in NIV assessment and management of care. There is the requirement of close links with critical care, and additional experience within this field is also available. There will also be the opportunity to assess patients in the weekly NIV clinic and be in attendance at the Neuromuscular NIV clinic. There is in addition a weekly NIV MDT.

You will have the opportunity for development of skills in respiratory muscle testing and also work closely with the physiotherapist within the team; this will allow you to develop skills in cough assessment and methods of augmentation. We are also expanding the use of remote monitoring (modem assisted) and virtual clinics, with the development of research projects into this field.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in local and national audits as well as research projects. We are an active department and local and national presentations are supported, in addition to having national links with previous collaboration in multicentre trials.

You will be expected to provide prospective cover for colleagues, with participation in the acute general medicine on call rota.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

  • Enhanced check with barred list information, including an adults and children’s barred list check

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice on the anticipated start date for the post.

Course Funding: Please note that unless agreed by the Division in advance, course funding is not available for Clinical Fellow or fixed term cover for training grade.
