Community Practitioner (Ambulance Paramedic)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team of Community Practitioners (CP’s), working for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust Ambulance Service (IWAS).

The CP role is an integral part of providing emergency and urgent care across the Island covering a variety of areas. These consist of but are not limited to:

  • Nightly duties covering GP out of hours home visits working closely with the Clinical Support Desk.
  • Working with Patient Group Directives (PGD’s) or independent prescribing to provide a broader scope of treatment
  • Verification of Expected Deaths
  • Catheter complications
  • End of Life/ palliative care working closely with the Local Hospice
  • Wound care
  • PEG feed/Gastrostomy complications and other additional skills.
  • Operating in a response vehicle responding to emergency and urgent calls.
  • Supporting and working alongside the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre (UCC)
  • Ambulance shifts undertaking the full range of paramedic and CP skills as required.
  • To also include potential future developments.

We are looking to appoint a HCPC registered Paramedic with a broad depth of knowledge and experience in emergency, urgent and primary care. Band 7 CP’s are expected to have 3 modules at level 7 covering physical assessment and history taking, Diagnostic Assessment and Decision Making and Research Methods. Please see information below regarding candidates without these qualifications. The successful applicant would be expected to continue on the advanced clinical practitioner masters pathway to become an Advanced Clinical Practitioner which includes undertaking the independent prescribing module. A range of formative and summative workplace-based assessments in practice will be completed throughout the programme to demonstrate progression and competence to achieve the advanced clinical practitioner status. This will be overseen by Consultants and Doctors in the Emergency Department and UCC. Training regarding catheters and end of life care will be organised within the trust if required.

The applicant will need to be adaptable and willing to engage in advancing the CP role. This will include attending regular meetings, self-managing training needs and taking on projects. The successful candidate will be required to self-audit their practice with portfolio maintenance, using a mature approach to identifying own training needs and proactively closing them. The CP’s work a 24/7 rota, it is important the successful candidate is flexible at times to ensure CP cover is provided and to allow all the CP team to have access to the educational training.

We are looking for qualified paramedics who are:

  • Have excellent driving skills and already trained to drive under blue light conditions.
  • Compassionate and able to remain calm under pressure.
  • Emotionally and physically resilient and a good communicator.
  • Want to work in a challenging environment or situation and deal with patients and relatives with dignity and respect.

You will require:

  • To be a Qualified Paramedic with current HCPC registration.
  • A full valid UK driving license (including Category B and Category C1 – over 3500kg with no more than 3 points.
  • Able to commit to 24/7 shift work.
  • All successful candidates who are offered a job with us will have to undertake employment checks as part of our recruitment process, including an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Baring Service) check, clearance from our Occupational Health department, references, ID and right-to-work verification.
