Trust Grade Doctor in Renal Transplant Surgery

Applications are invited for the position of Trust Grade Doctor at ST3+ Registrar level in Renal Transplant Surgery based at the Leicester General Hospital. Applications will also be considered from suitably qualified and motivated CT2/3 Level doctors.

The post-holder will work within the Registrar team and be expected to,
take part in daily ward rounds, assist in out-patient clinics, participate in MDT meetings, participate in a 1:5 on call registrar rota and perform other relevant work as directed by the Consultants. This post is available for up to 24 months and is to commence as soon as possible.

The unit is staffed by four consultant transplant surgeons, a surgical SPR, four fellows at registrar level, 2 FY2 doctors and 3 FY1 doctors.

Last year the unit performed 129 kidney transplants, 30 of which were from live donors. The transplant service relies heavily on a team approach and the surgical staff work in close conjunction with the nephrology team. Approximately 600 vascular or peritoneal access operations including complex procedures are performed each year. In addition to transplant activity the main interests of the consultant surgical staff are vascular access surgery and endocrine surgery.

The unit has experienced a significant expansion in the volume of kidney transplants performed. The appointee will be part of a surgical team providing services for patients requiring renal transplantation and vascular/peritoneal access, and is expected to participate in all clinical activities, theatre sessions including live donor nephrectomy, kidney transplant dialysis access surgery and endocrine surgery as well as expected to participate in audit and clinical research.

Although this position is not recognised for training by the Postgraduate Deanery, successful applicants will have the opportunity to participate in some of the wider educational activities of the department (journal clubs, MDT meetings, radiology meetings)

Applicants must have or be eligible to apply for full GMC registration with a license to practice to take up this post. You should also have surgical experience.
