The NHS Blood and Transplant is an integral part of the NHS, collecting and processing 2 million blood donations a year. Our Healthcare Scientists provide crucial support to NHS Hospitals, processing, testing and issuing blood and its components and delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to the transfusion of blood and stem cells, transplantation and tissue banking.


Our Red Cell Immunohaematology department provides reference and blood provision services to regional hospitals using advanced red cell serology. Our work includes the investigation of immune haemolytic disorders, the resolution of blood group anomalies, complex red cell antibody problems and the provision of blood for specific patients. We also provide routine testing and assessment of antibody levels in antenatal samples and undertake routine antenatal screening.


We will require a commitment to working flexible hours to accommodate an extended working day (early start, normal, or late finish) and participation in the out of hours rota.


An HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with significant post registration experience, you’ll have a specialist qualification in Transfusion/Transplantation Science. A Biomedical Scientist wishing to develop specialist transfusion skills will be considered for the post, paid as a BMS on a Band 5 whilst achieving the necessary experience and qualifications. We have just one post to recruit to and our priority is to appoint a BMS Specialist on Band 6.

This post is also subject to a Higher Cost Area Supplement: 20% of basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £4,200 per annum and a maximum payment of £6,469 per annum. From the 1st of April 2019 this will increase to a minimum payment of £4,400 per annum, and a maximum payment of £6,777 per annum.
