The Reagents Production department manufactures in vitro diagnostic reagents from red cells, enzymes, chemicals and serum. These are used for serological testing within Blood Transfusion laboratories in hospitals and also within NHSBT testing labs.

The Reagents department is part of the Red Cell Immunohaematology department within NHSBT. You will work in the Reagents Production laboratory where you will manufacture reagents into various diagnostic antibody screens as well as other diagnostic test kits to enable detection of specific antibodies in patient samples.

The main steps in the production of the reagents include:

  • Washing red cells using Cobe 2991 cell processors and diluting them into bulk bags containing preservative solution within a cleanroom environment
  • Dispensing the bulk bags of diluted red cells in sterile containers/packs using both manual dispensing pumps (for small volume products) followed by manual screw capping of containers as well as using a fully automatic dispensing and capping machine for large volume dispenses. This work is carried out within the cleanroom
  • Manufacture of enzymes & chemicals within a fume hood
  • Filtering of enzymes and serum within the cleanroom
  • Dispensing enzymes, chemicals and serum within the cleanroom
  • Labelling and packing of large volumes of dispensed red cell reagents within the main lab area
  • Working with liquid nitrogen when selecting red cells from liquid nitrogen dewars and thawing the cells so they are ready for processing within the cleanroom/laminar flow cabinet
  • Using haematology analysers to measure the red cell concentration of manufacture reagents
  • Other duties include label printing, environmental monitoring, booking in goods, housekeeping, cleaning
  • You will be required to deal with queries from within your own team as well as queries from other departments
  • You will also be required to train and develop less experienced members of staff once trained yourself

To be considered you will need either a Level 3 qualification e.g. ‘A’ Levels OR National Diploma in a relevant subject area OR extensive experience of working in a manufacturing or laboratory environment.

Ideally you will have a working knowledge of basic IT packages, and some experience of working unsupervised in a laboratory environment. A good team player, you’ll be capable of motivating both yourself and others as you tackle a wide variety of tasks.
