Genomic Laboratory Hub Operational Director

The London South Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH) and network was recently established in order to transform the delivery of genomic testing for cancer and rare diseases across South East England. The GLH will be a key element of the national genomic medicine service being implemented by NHS England to enable the NHS to fully benefit from advances in genomics.


Guy’s and St Thomas’ lead a consortium of NHS organisations and laboratory providers who will deliver genomic testing services across South London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. The consortium includes King’s College Hospital, St George’s University Hospitals, South London & Maudsley, Royal Brompton & Harefield, and Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells, and Viapath as a delivery partner. The new laboratory hub, which will be at the centre of the network of laboratories in the region, will be hosted by Guy’s and St Thomas’, with Viapath delivering the hub capability.


Our consortium is seeking to appoint an Operational Director who will be responsible for leading the overall operational direction and management of the GLH and Viapath’s genomics service. The Operational Director is a joint appointment between Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Viapath, and will be accountable to the London South GLH Partnership Board, Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Viapath. The role is a senior leadership position within the GLH Service Delivery Team and Viapath.


The post holder will be responsible for ensuring contractual requirements and KPIs are met within the agreed plan and budget, and address any operational and quality issues. In addition to directing operational delivery of the GLH, they will oversee performance and quality across all laboratories in the network, working with local laboratory leads to address issues as required. They will manage activity, direct services, ensure timeliness of results and the optimal deployment of resources. They will lead in the operational delivery of the consortium’s mobilisation and transition plan to ensure it is delivered on time and according to the agreed target operating model.


The Operational Director will be required to work closely with the Scientific Director to ensure the GLH is at the forefront of National Genomic Testing Services and ensuring services are underpinned by all appropriate structures (i.e. scientific, educational, quality and managerial) to maintain that position.


The successful candidate will have significant experience of leading and managing large scale diagnostic genomic laboratories, and have extensive demonstrable skills in the operational management of complex services. They will have considerable experience of financial management, team leadership and will demonstrate evidence of successfully leading transformational change.
