Advanced Nurse Practitioner - Paediatrics

Band 8a (£42,414 - £49,969) - Permanent Position - Full Time

2018 is an exciting year for Paediatrics on the Isle of Wight. Alongside the launch of our ward-based Paediatric Assessment Unit, the Isle of Wight NHS is setting up a new seven day paediatric advanced nurse practitioner service (APNP) in our Emergency Department (ED). We’re looking for an exceptional team of people to be part of shaping our exciting new services.

The service, from 9am to 9pm, Monday to Sunday will be responsible for the initial assessment and treatment of children self-presenting in ED, and support in the treatment of children arriving by ambulance. They will discharge or stream to the PAU or children’s ward, or refer on to other specialties as appropriate. They will work within the emergency access standards and to ensure high quality, consistent clinical care.

The APNP will have outstanding child-centred skills, experience working within the field of emergency medicine, and have the ability to demonstrate advanced clinical and diagnostic skills. They will be committed to continuous development of their clinical skills and reflective practice. All team members will work in a supportive ED environment with day to day supervision and support provided by both ED and Paediatric consultants and their teams.

The successful applicants will be educated to masters level and already have experience working autonomously in unscheduled care, they must be able to demonstrate compliance with the NMC competencies for advanced nursing practise and accreditation. Although the role is primarily clinical, there is dedicated weekly management time to work on the development and audit of protocols, to undertake training and for the supervision and mentoring of the two trainee APNP posts that form part of the team. There is also the opportunity for a regular shift within the PAU.

The Isle of Wight’s unique geography means that our ED serves the local population of 140,000 permanent residents and several million visitors to the Island over the year. As the only Emergency Department and trauma unit on the Island, the department offers a unique opportunity to support a range of patients. Around 12,000 children are seen in ED each year. We frequently transfer to our regional trauma unit by air and sea and are part of a number of paediatric networks based across Wessex.
