Cardiology SPR Trust Grade

Job Reference: 358-1647138-RRC

University Hospitals of Leicester

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic physician to help deliver quality emergency medical care for cardiovascular patients admitted to University of Leicester NHS Trust. We are recruiting a registrar with a special interest in acute cardiovascular medicine pending making substantive appointments. The trust currently has emergency medical admissions across three sites – The Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and the Glenfield Hospital. This post will be based at the Glenfield Hospital which delivers a Cardio-respiratory take of approximately 40 - 60 patients per day. The clinical decisions unit (CDU) at the Glenfield was opened 10 years ago, extended in 2012 and it is still developing in order to respond to increasing demand of cardiology and respiratory care. CCU at the Glenfield is one of the largest in the area and caters for acute cardiovascular patients from the area with direct access to broad portfolio of cardiovascular interventions. The successful applicant will play a senior role in leading the cardiovascular programme at the CDU and CCU for the rapid assessment triage and treatment and discharge of patients. In addition it is envisaged that the person will contribute to the expansion of the outpatient service for general cardiology. The primary commitment of this post is to the Clinical decisions unit.

The cardiology department at UHL Trust has a reputation of an angioplasty centre of excellence, undertaking approximately 2,000 PCI procedures per annum, including many cases of complex angioplasty, as well as being a lead centre across a broad range of international and national research in the field and has access to most adjuvant technologies. The department has an active acute coronary care unit to which the ambulance service has direct access. Acute patients are also transferred from referring hospitals as the department offers a 24/7 acute service. A primary PCI programme has been fully active since 2009.

The Transcatheter aortic valve programme as well as further structural intervention has a long established reputation. It was the first unit in the UK to start the programme and is one of the largest in the country. Further active non coronary interventions include mitral procedures, septal defects therapies and valve interventions.

Coronary artery disease management is supported by an excellent electro- physiology service which provides complex devices and CRT management along with AF and other ablation procedures. The imaging group provides state of the art and active research in stress echo, nuclear stress/perfusion and stress MRI along with cardiac CT.

A ward-based system of patient care is in operation and where possible patients are placed under the care of the appropriate specialist consultant and the number of the patients under each physician is limited by bed (ward) availability.
