Building on the NHS contribution to the 100,000 Genomes Project, the introduction of a national genomic medicine service has created 7 Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLHs). The North West GLH is hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and includes sites in both Manchester and Liverpool.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Genetic Technologist with specific skills in Genomic analysis techniques, to join the North West GLH based at our Liverpool site. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to work in an advanced laboratory environment and be part of a team delivering specialist diagnostic services.

You will have a good degree in a biological discipline ideally with a significant component in human genetics. Good computer skills are essential and previous experience using bioinformatics or genetic analysis software packages would be advantageous. Previous experience of lab work in a diagnostic genetics laboratory is desirable. You should have good communication skills, be able to work well in a team, remain calm under pressure, and be able to prioritise workload. The work requires attention to detail and good organisational / multi-tasking skills. Some essential tasks are repetitive and require specific unbroken work periods. You will need good levels of both concentration and manual dexterity.

Full training will be given and the successful candidate will be expected to work towards Professional Standards Authority (PSA) Accredited Voluntary Registration via the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS). You will be appraised on a yearly basis with a view to developing further knowledge and skills where appropriate. The post will involve working within a technical team carrying out laboratory processes as well as some administrative work. A flexible attitude is essential as is the ability to work to tight deadlines. You should be willing to be part of a flexible working rota.

The post will be located at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital site as part of the NW GLH. The NW GLH is one of the largest and most comprehensive clinical genomic labs in the UK, consisting of biochemical, cytogenetic and molecular genetics laboratories which together provide diagnostic services to a population of approx 7 million people, a number of nationally commissioned specialties and also receives international referrals. We provide a wide range of specialised genomic tests and have a considerable research and development portfolio. The NW GLH employs over 180 staff including clinical scientists, genetic technologists, clinical bioinformaticians and administrative staff.

The North West GLH aims to continue to deliver a patient-focused service with an international reputation and be a premier supplier of laboratory testing in the NHS. We are also implementing ambitious plans for modernising and improving service delivery.
