The commitment of our 17,100 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2018 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.

The Biomedical Research Centre at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Trust (GSTT) and King’s College London (KCL) is seeking to appoint a Head for their Genomics Research Platform. This is a senior position suitable for candidates experienced in genomics wet lab workflows and the associated data analysis.

The Genomics Research Platform uses cutting edge technologies to support fast tracking of laboratory research into clinics through provision of microarrays, library preparation, next generation sequencing and data analysis services.

In January 2020, the lab is poised to relocate to the new state- of-the-art Advanced Therapies Centre within Guy’s Hospital as part of an integrated hub of laboratories supporting the translation of novel experimental gene/cell therapies into the clinical setting. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the new centre.

The post holder will be expected to manage all existing services, and advance the service repertoire, through deployment of new technologies and analytical pipelines to meet the future needs of the BRC’s clinical academic researchers.

Currently the lab is focussed on expanding its single cell genomics and long read sequencing offerings, experience in all aspects of single cell genomics investigations and long read sequencing would be an advantage.

The post holder is expected to participate in grant applications, contribute to publications arising from service and R&D projects conducted in the lab. You will be required to manage a substantial budget, generate and manage income, calculate costs for grants and services, and conduct business planning for the advancement of the platform.

The lab is equipped with liquid handling systems, numerous cutting edge instruments and next generation sequencers (Illumina and Nanopore), and is supported by a strong team comprised of an experienced technical manager, two wet lab technicians, two bioinformatics postdoctoral scientists and an administrative assistant.

The candidate will be required to interact with researchers and clinicians at all levels of seniority and supervise a multicultural-multidisciplinary team.

The post offers an exciting opportunity for a senior scientist with substantial postdoctoral experience, to lead and advance a genomics service lab scientifically, managerially and strategically. Successful candidates will have significant experience in wet and dry genomics workflows, a good publication record and experience of supporting grant funding applications.

You will have expertise in developing and optimizing molecular protocols for the latest genomics technologies and their analysis pipelines. The post holder is expected to have a good comprehension of service operations and good communication skills. Prior experience in supervising staff and managing budgets is essential.
