The National Blood Service is an integral part of the NHS, collecting and processing 2 million blood donations a year. Our Healthcare Scientists provide crucial support to NHS Hospitals, processing, testing and issuing blood and its components and delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to the transfusion of blood and stem cells, transplantation and tissue banking

Our Red Cell Immunohaematology department provides reference and blood provision services to regional hospitals using advanced red cell serology. Our work includes the investigation of immune haemolytic disorders, the resolution of blood group anomalies, complex red cell antibody problems and the provision of blood for specific patients. We also provide routine testing and assessment of antibody levels in antenatal samples and undertake routine antenatal screening.

You should be an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, looking to develop your expertise in Transfusion / Transplantation Science.

Although preference will be given to a HCPC registered BMS, we would consider appointing a Trainee Biomedical Scientist. As a trainee, you will work as a trainee carrying out clinical technical duties under the supervision of a Health Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist. The post holder will gain the education, training and experience necessary for HCPC Registration by undertaking duties commensurate with their current level of training requirements and receiving regular professional competence appraisals by NHSBT Trainers and Managers.

Once relevant training has been completed you will then be expected to participate in the 24.7 on-call rota.

For a Trainee BMS’s salary please see the attached additional information document (Benefits document).

In return you’ll benefit from an excellent pension, and the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, using modern equipment and practices, where you can develop your specialist skills and scientific education.

Tier 2 Certificate of Sponsorship

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. The UK Visas and Immigration department requires employers to complete this test to show that no suitably qualified EEA or EU worker can fill the post. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

From 6 April 2017, Tier 2 skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, must present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.
