Ward 1 is the Medical Day Case Unit based at the Leicester General Hospital. It provides medical day case treatments (and diagnostics) to patients referred from many different specialities.

We have a vacancy for 2 Band 5 staff nurses. The successful candidates will be expected to manage the ward (in the absence of the ward sister and deputy), support , encourage and develop all staff groups. Our main objective is for each patient to be treated at a time convenient to them, in a friendly and caring environment. There is also an expectation that the successful candidate will be able to work on their own initiative,and advertise the service offered and increase use of the MDCU and aid admission avoidance into UHL acute beds. We treat many patients regularly and the ability to communicate at all levels is essential. The Unit is nurse led and the successful candidate will be expected to accept referrals from both colleagues at UHL and GP referrals (under specific criteria) and will need to have a sound knowledge of medical treatments. The ability to give intravenous infusions, cannulate and undertake phlebotomy is desirable, but training can be given. The successful candidate will need to be confident in their leadership skills and be able to demonstrate personal and professional development.

The successful candidates will need to ensure that they are up to date with medical treatments, and be able to document accurately any care that is given, following particular pathways. They will need to liaise with all levels of staff, not just within Emergency & specialist medicine, but also from other hospitals and departments. Negotiating skills are essential.

The post is varied and requires an individual who is confident, has the ability to communicate well and to use their initiative in a creative manner to ensure swift and efficient treatment of all referred to the Unit.
