Consultant in medical virology

Job Reference: 188-MT938-MEDICAL

Employer:
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
Department:
Infectious Diseases
Location:
Southampton General Hospital, Southampton
Salary:
£77,913-£105,042 pa pro rata

Online applications are invited to apply for a full time consultant in medical virology or in medical virology and infectious diseases consisting of 10 PAs per week. This post is permanent.

ABOUT THE ROLE & DEPARTMENT

The appointee will join a dynamic team of 9 other consultants in a rapidly evolving and cohesive infection department which provides the full spectrum of Medical Virology, Medical Microbiology, Inpatient and Outpatient Infectious Diseases, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) and Infection Prevention and Control services.

The post holder will be expected to provide clinical virology support to UHS services and GPs, and contribute to support and development of the virology diagnostic laboratory.  The virology service at UHS supports the management of a large number of immunocompromised patients and the post-holder would be expected to support UHS clinical services by providing clinical liaison including attending MDTs, ward consults, preparing guidelines and supporting infection control activities.

Consultants are encouraged to support the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching curriculum and to contribute to collaborative research work, as well as to contribute to the supervision of Infection trainees.

Virology and microbiology diagnostic laboratory services are provided by the on-site laboratory, which processes around 600,000 specimens per annum and provides a comprehensive service covering virology, bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology and parasitology and has a well equipped molecular facility. The diagnostic laboratory is recommended for UKAS ISO15189 accreditation.  The virology and microbiology diagnostic service has recently become part of UHS’s Pathology Department. This is an exciting time to join us as we are looking for an individual to work together with the existing consultant medical virologist to help shape and improve the virology service to the trust, which has seen growth in demand for medical virology expertise.

Applicants will be expected to hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Virology or a joint CCT in Medical Virology and Infectious Diseases or show evidence of equivalency, or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
