Southwark Council is an organisation of more than 4000 employees providing services to the community of Southwark numbering just under 300,000 people. Southwark as part of central London faces many social and economic challenges with areas of extreme social and economic disadvantage contained within the borough’s boundaries along side some of the most affluent parts of the capital. With nearly 60% of our population under 35, the Council must plan to ensure the appropriate long term infrastructure is in place to deliver high quality accommodation at affordable rents: an education system to supply high quality outcomes and create the environment to build long term economic capacity within the borough for the benefit of the people of Southwark, and London as a whole. The Council itself has over the last 10 years built its own commitment to development by embedding and expanding its apprentice programme providing ostensibly young members of our community with a high value apprenticeship to improve their long term employability in the London jobs market place.

Regeneration has over the last 15 to 20 years been of key importance in the development of Southwark as part of Central London, with the Council playing a significant role in using this regeneration to benefit the Community. The Council has as part of its long term regeneration commitment decided to drive an increase in the amount of social housing within the borough, including its own plan to deliver 11,000 new Council homes by 2043 with 1,500 of these homes available by 2018.

The Council directly employs a diverse staff group, in a wide variety of roles ranging from manual and skilled trades people to staff employed in professional areas such as social care, legal, housing management and public health in addition to technical professions such as trading standards, development planning and environmental management.

The Council underpins its ‘fairer future for all’ promises to the people of Southwark, in the development and delivery of services to the community with a number of fairer future principals. The Council has a workforce strategy that is aligned with these ‘fairer future’ principles. The strategy seeks to ensure the Council has the workforce it needs to deliver its services in an effective and efficient manner and further seeks to develop its existing staff group to achieve better service outcomes.
