NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is the commissioning organisation for the whole county of Dorset. The group is a membership organisation, formed of all 86 local GP practices in the county.

Our mission is to support the people of Dorset to lead healthier lives.

What do we do?

Our principal work is to plan, develop and commission health services on behalf of the local people. We are responsible for commissioning:

  • Planned hospital care
  • Urgent and emergency care, including the 111 service
  • Community health services
  • Mental health and learning disability services
  • Rehabilitation care
  • Maternity, children's and family services
  • NHS continuing healthcare

Our key providers across the county include:

  • Dorset HealthCare
  • Dorset County Hospital
  • Poole General Hospital
  • Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals
  • Salisbury Hospital
  • Yeovil Hospital
  • South West Ambulance Service

There are many other service providers from the charitable, voluntary and private sectors that allow patients a wider choice of service location and type.

We are committed to improving the local health services to reflect our local population needs and do this by working through a number of Clinical Working Groups (CWGs) which consider where improvments can be made. Each of these work programmes is led by a local GP, supported by other doctors, specialists and commissioning managers.

How do we work?

All 86 GP practices are sub-grouped into 13 locality groups (or geographical areas), which have been involved in commissioning for the local region for many years. Each locality has a Locality Chair (a local GP), who is also a member of the Governing Body. This ensures our decisions are clinically-led.

The Governing Body is made up of our 13 Locality Chairs, a Governing Body Chair, our accountable Chief Officer, our accountable Chief Finance Officer, two Lay Members, a Nurse Lead and a Secondary Care Lead. The Governing Body is a key decision-making group of the CCG.

We employ support staff so that our clinical staff can concentrate on the bigger, strategic issues, and still have time to see their patients. Working for the CCG is a challenging, ever-changing and rewarding experience. You have the chance to contribute to improving the health of people in Dorset via a wide range of professional careers such as communications, finance and HR as well healthcare delivery roles. Further information regarding the NHS Dorset CCG, including our aims, values, strategy and annual plan, can be found on our website.
