This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established Inpatient Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) in the context of a Perinatal Mental Health Service undergoing expansion. The role is part of a full multidisciplinary team comprising psychiatry, psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, nursery nurses and HCAs. Mothers with severe mental health problems are admitted to the MBU with their babies, or sometimes in the third trimester of pregnancy and a range of therapeutic interventions are available. The team work closely with local perinatal community mental health teams across a large area, as well as the perinatal inreach/outreach team. There are two Consultant Clinical Psychologist Leads inputting to the MBU and across the community, leading on maternal mental health and infant mental health respectively.

We are looking for an experienced Clinical Psychologist with a keen interest in perinatal mental health. An understanding of both maternal and infant mental health is important as well as skills in interventions to supporting parent-infant relationships (or willingness to develop this). You will work both directly with mothers, babies and families providing specialist psychological assessment and intervention. A key part of the role is also the indirect work, by liaising with and supporting ward staff to ensure psychologically-informed care. This involves attending regular ward reviews and MDT meetings and developing other aspects of psychological provision on the unit. The role may also involve management and supervision of qualified and/or unqualified psychologists.

Applicants will need to have a genuine interest in perinatal psychological therapies, excellent communication skills, and a good knowledge of safeguarding. Experience of working in the Perinatal Mental Health field is desirable, and/or a keen interest in this specialist area. You will receive specialist supervision from a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in perinatal mental health and specialist training as required by the role.

The base is at the Barberry National Centre for Mental Health, Vincent Drive, Birmingham. Travel to other sites within the Trust may be required.
