For posts on Public Health England Civil Service terms and conditions, on appointment the starting salary is normally the minimum point (see salary range above). This will be dependent on the successful candidate’s current salary and terms and/or equivalent experience. The Civil Service pay structure and progression is different from NHS Agenda for Change, most local authority pay grades and other systems which have annual pay increments. An opportunity has arisen for a fixed term consultant Medical microbiologist at Birmingham Public Health laboratory for one year period starting from 1st of April 2018. The consultant will be working closely with clinical and laboratory colleagues in the host and other NHS trusts and with Health Protection Teams, the Lead Public Health Microbiologist and Epidemiologists in the east and West Midlands region. The appointee will be based at HPA Public Health Laboratory sited at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. This is a consultant led service that provides a comprehensive range of microbiology services in a fully accredited, well equipped laboratory.

The successful candidate will be joining a department with 6 Consultant Medical Microbiologist and 3 Consultant Medical Virologist. The appointee will be expected to be a full participant in the delivery of clinical diagnostic services and meet the challenges of working towards a fully integrated Microbiology/Virology/Public Health Microbiology Clinical and Laboratory Service. Applicants should have a CCT or be on the GMC’s Specialist Register – candidates who are within six months of obtaining their CCT by the date of interview may also apply.

The successful candidate will be appointed to the point of the Consultant salary scale appropriate to their years of seniority.
