Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Newly Qualified General Practitioner (GP) to join our established Primary Care Network (PCN).

This role is ideal for a newly qualified GP passionate about delivering excellent care, developing professionally, and working collaboratively within a forward-thinking PCN. You will have the opportunity to focus on specific population health needs, supported by experienced mentors and an integrated team.

Main duties of the job

You will provide comprehensive primary care, including patient consultations, diagnosing and treating common illnesses, prescribing medications, offering health advice, and referring patients to specialists when necessary.

About us

Primary Care Networks (PCNs) are a fundamental part of the NHS Long-Term Plan, bringing GP practices together to enhance workforce recruitment and retention, manage financial and operational challenges, expand services for patients, and integrate more effectively with the broader health and care system.

Within Totton PCN, we have two surgeries, New Horizons Medical Partnership and Testvale Surgery, serving a population of approximately 37,000 patients. Both surgeries are active training practices with CQC ratings of Good. Totton PCN are an expanding and progressive organisation with excellent patient care as our central value. We have a host of multidisciplinary staff within the PCN including a Pharmacy Team, FCP MSK, Social Prescribers, Home Visiting Service, Care Co-ordinators, Care Navigators and a well-established Mental Health Team.

GP ARRS Duties and Responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the GP. There may be on occasion a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent on factors such as workload and staffing levels.

1. Patient Care

  • Conduct a variety of face-to-face, telephone, and online consultations, including triage and follow-ups.Provide care within both surgeries, for housebound patients and care homes.
  • Deliver high-quality care to patients with acute, chronic, and complex conditions.
  • Develop personalised care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the wider care team.
  • Administration - dealing with queries, patient test results, referral letters NHS/private, tasks, emails and other paperwork and correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Cover all the clinical management of the patients in surgery as appropriate, including initiating investigations, reviewing results, making referrals to secondary care or to other providers as appropriate.

2. Population Health Management

  • Support PCN projects aimed at addressing local health inequalities and improving outcomes.
  • Work on proactive care initiatives for specific patient groups (e.g., elderly, those with multiple long-term conditions).

3. Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Work closely with ARRS professionals, including the Pharmacy, Social Prescribing, and First Contact Physiotherapists, Care Co-ordinators and Home Visiting Team to deliver holistic care.
  • Participate in case reviews and multidisciplinary team meetings to optimise care delivery.

4. Professional Development

  • Access tailored mentoring and support through your early career as part of our robust GP fellowship program within Wessex.
  • Engage in continuous professional development, including funded training opportunities relevant to your clinical interests.
  • Lead or participate in quality improvement and audit projects to enhance patient care.

5. Administrative Duties

  • Ensure accurate and timely record-keeping using clinical systems, the main systems being EMIS, Docman and ICE.
  • Contribute to meeting practice and PCN targets, including the Network DES, QoF and enhanced services.

6. Leadership and Innovation

  • Play an active role in developing PCN services, bringing fresh ideas and perspectives as a newly qualified GP.
  • Engage in teaching, training, or mentorship opportunities within the PCN if desired. Both surgeries are a training practice and actively engage within the PCN wide education program.
