Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced technical training lead to join our comprehensive Genetics Service at the South East Genomics Laboratory Hub, based at Guy's Hospital.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the delivery and co-ordination of technical training programmes such as Apprenticeships (Level 4 and 6) and Genetic Technologist Training. They will have extensive knowledge and experience in a broad range of molecular genetic techniques as well as significant experience in delivering technical or scientific training. They will work closely with the Technical Leads, the Technical Laboratory Managers as well as the Scientific Education and Training team. In parallel with training provision, they will also contribute to the technical team workflow by carrying out testing of patient samples, analysis and reporting of results. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent analytical, communication and organisational skills.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be a dedicated and enthusiastic individual with substantial knowledge of molecular genetic techniques and experience of analysing and reporting results but also in training and mentoring other members of staff. The post holder will manage the technical apprenticeship pathway and be responsible for planning and co-ordinating technical training of colleagues across all teams. The post holder should be passionate about the training and development of the technical workforce. They will work closely with other Technical Leads, Technical Lab Managers, the Scientific Education Training Team as well as with Scientists across the Department to ensure quality service provision. Applicants should have exceptional communication skills, demonstrate initiative, support continual quality improvement and prioritise workload.

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced technician to step into a training and development role; applications are encouraged from technicians with significant knowledge and experience of a genomics diagnostic laboratory who wish to develop their skills and explore new challenges.

About us

The Genetics laboratories are part of Synnovis Analytics and are located within the Guy's Hospital site. The Genetics department is made up of more than 200 staff and with close links to Clinical Services throughout Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTfT) and St George's Hospital Foundation Trust. With our partner laboratories, the GLH for the South East region provides a comprehensive genomics service for a population of 8 million which includes specialist germline and cancer tests and a class-leading whole exome sequencing service. The laboratory works collaboratively with other pathology disciplines and research groups such as GSTfT Biomedical Research Centre and Genomics Innovation Unit and the GSTfT Assisted Conception Unit for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis.

At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, there is ongoing planning for our people and services to start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests.
