Main duties of the job

This role offers the chance to enhance patient care by selecting the right investigations, performing flow cytometry, and analysing data to create detailed clinical reports for various referral indications. Exceptional communication skills, effective time management, and a strong work ethic are crucial, as you'll ensure timely reporting of complex analyses to support rapid patient treatment decisions. Key responsibilities include handling samples and reagents, managing stock and documents, conducting audits, supervising and training staff, monitoring performance, maintaining laboratory equipment, and assisting with quality management to uphold UKAS compliance.

The service has laboratories on both the Guy's and St Thomas' sites operating Beckman Coulter DX-Flex and Aquios flow cytometers and utilising DURAClone Antibody Panel Technology and has UKAS 15189:2022 accreditation.

The Immunophenotyping Laboratory at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital delivers a comprehensive flow cytometry service for haematological malignancies and immune monitoring. We offer extensive testing for the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of haematological cancers and disorders. Fully UKAS accredited, our laboratory is backed by dedicated quality and clinical teams to maintain the highest standards throughout the diagnostic process.

At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. The main duties of this role involve contributing to the clinical operations of the Immunophenotyping Laboratory and performing both technical and analytical tasks to provide a high-quality immunophenotyping service. This includes conducting analyses for the diagnosis and monitoring of haematological malignancies and disorders, as well as other necessary laboratory tasks.

Candidates must hold a BSc (Hons) in a relevant field, be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical (or Clinical) Scientist, and possess the IBMS specialist portfolio or equivalent qualifications or experience.

Essential skills include proficiency in Laboratory Information and Quality Management Systems (LIMS and QMS), strong IT skills, and experience in stock and document control. The ideal candidate will have experience in staff training and supervision and excellent communication skills. The candidate must be adept at multitasking, problem-solving, flexible, and able to manage time effectively to meet deadlines while maintaining quality service. A keen attention to detail, commitment to service delivery, and patient focus are crucial. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in the haemato-oncology field and be motivated to advance their own skills, support others, and contribute to departmental development. Foundational experience in flow cytometry is essential.
