Job summary
We are seeking a highly-motivated and experienced individual in cancer genomics to further their career and knowledge of haematological malignancies. Contributing towards patient care by participating in the provision of high quality genomic analyses of haematological tissues, as part of the King's Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Centre (SE-HMDS) within the South East NHS Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH).
Registration with the HCPC as a Clinical Scientist, substantial experience of cancer genomics including cytogenomic and/or molecular techniques, excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic are essential for employment at band 7 equivalence, as the post holder will ensure the timeliness of reporting of complex analyses to enable rapid patient treatment decisions.
Candidates with relevant experience who are preparing for HCPC registration as a clinical scientist will also be considered. If successful pre-registered candidates will be employed at band 6 equivalence until registration is achieved. The GLH is equip to offer support if required to help individuals achieve HCPC registration as a clinical scientist via a number of different routes. The laboratory is accredited as an STP training laboratory with the National School of Healthcare Science, those candidates in the final stages of a relevant STP are therefore also encouraged to apply for this role and can be supported in the final stages to registration if successful.
Main duties of the job
As part of the dynamic team; you will be responsible for the selection of appropriate genomic investigations, and the analysis and interpretation of complex genomic abnormalities to produce clinical reports for a spectrum of referral indications, utilising a range of technologies according to experience. You will also assist with evolving the repertoire of testing available to our patients, driving current and future research and development projects utilising novel technology, and have the opportunity to present at local, national and international scientific meetings.
The successful applicant will join the UKAS accredited cytogenomics laboratory that forms part of SE-HMDS, a multidisciplinary team of specialist pathologists. We are the single HMDS service for the South East of England, serving a population of over 6 million people across South London and the South East of England.
Both fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) analysis and karyotype chromosome analysis form the backbone of the current cytogeneomic laboratory testing repertoire. With close working relationships, opportunities and encouragement to work with genomic techniques already embedded elsewhere within the SE-HMDS. In addition current developmental projects include a next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel for detection of gene fusions, and optical genome mapping for detection of abnormalities across the whole genome.
About us
You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The Synnovis Way Development programme, the Scientific Learning and Development Fund and the Synnovis Academy through which you can receive funding / support for advanced qualifications such as apprenticeships, MScs, Higher Specialised Scientist Training (HSST) and PhDs.
Through our Innovation Accelerator Fund, you can apply for finance to get that new innovative scientific project off the ground, and participate with the wider scientific community through symposiums, conferences and other peer group meetings.
