Job summary

Infection Science at Synnovis has an exciting opportunity and are looking to employ an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Specilaist Biomedical Scientist to join the Virology team to provide a seven day service working a 37.5 hour week.

The post holder will perform a wide range of diagnostic assays utilizing both serological and molecular techniques. The highest standards of quality and safety are essential.

As a HCPC registered Senior Biomedical Scientist, you will provide expertise and capability to the diagnostic laboratory to maintain the service of the unit and support continuous improvement. As a Senior BMS, you will also be responsible for, and lead in, an area of technical specialism providing both training and support. The post holder will also line manage staff and deputize for the lab manager as required.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic team based at St Thomas Hospital, which is an integral part of infections sciences and works closely with the trusts High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) unit.

The post holder would be expected to join a team that works an average 37.5 hours/week and be prepared to work as part of an extended working day (EWD) rota that includes weekday shifts (09:00am to 17:30pm), Early (08:00am to 16:30pm), and Late (11:30am to 20:00pm) shifts and Weekend/Bank Holiday (09:00am to 17:00pm).

Full training and support will be provided to assist you achieve your goal.

Main duties of the job

Virology is UKAS ISO15189 accredited and has a large team of staff consisting of 5 Senior BMS, 10 BMS, 2 APs and 15 B3 MLAs and consists of two sections; serology and molecular.

The serology section is highly automated, using up to date analysers such as the Abbott Architect (including SARS-CoV-2 IgG testing), Diasorin Liaison/XL and the Biomerieux Vidas 3 as well as a selection of manual assays. The molecular section uses the QiaSymphony extraction platform, Qiagility sample handler, ABI 7500 Real-Time and Aus Diagnostics EasyPlex and HighPlex instruments (respiratory panel and SARS-CoV-2) and Abbott Alinity M instrument for Blood Borne viral loads. Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomonas, Mycoplasma genitalium and SARS-CoV-2 molecular assays are performed on the Hologic Panther platforms. The lab also supports the Trust as a High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID) - Respiratory unit via the Infection Sciences CL3 suite, provides a diagnstic service for ECMO patients and has been performing COVID-19 serology and RNA testing since the beginning of the global pandemic, with two enhanced CL2 suites.

The post holder will be expected to work autonomously or as part of a team on a rotational basis in the diagnostic area of virology, taking responsibility to perform the work to the required standards, trouble shoot, train and supervise other BMS and MLA staff as required. The post holder will also line manage staff and deputize for the lab manager as required.

Infection Sciences provides a comprehensive range of out of hours (OOH) 24/7 and extended working day (EWD) virology services and is sited at St Thomas' hospital. A team of Consultant and SpR's provide clinical liaison cover. The laboratory is well equipped, fully computerised and has obtained UKAS ISO15189 accreditation.

The department currently uses Pathnet, with a new integrated LIMS being built for 2023 and Q-Pulse as the QMS software. The Department also has a range of automation including Qiagen Qiasymphony, Ausdiagnostis, Hologic Panthers and ABI, Cepheids and Rotorgenes for Molecular testing. Abbott Architects and Diasorin Liaisons make up the serology laboratory with an extensive portfolio of manual tests.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is the lead specialist responsible for a team of Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants delivering a medical laboratory service which achieves the objectives of efficient and effective patient care and resource management. They will support the operations managers in providing comprehensive, high quality and responsive laboratory service. All staff are expected to work between from 8am and 8pm Monday to Sunday on a rotational basis including bank holidays or as required. Shift patterns are constantly under review to meet service needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Technical

  1. To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated-laboratory investigations.
  2. To ensure that test procedures are carried out according to SOPs and that staff are competent to undertake these procedures
  3. To undertake routine operative maintenance on laboratory instruments.
  4. To plan and organise their work and the work of others within the demands of the team.
  5. To ensure that reagents are prepared, stored and used in a manner suitable for patient investigations.
  6. To undertake technical validation of highly complex results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols
  7. To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
  8. To ensure that preventative maintenance schedules have been carried out on laboratory instruments prior to them being used for patient investigations
  9. To assess, initiate and monitor appropriate action when a situation may cause service delivery failure.
  10. To review, assess and initiate corrective action when quality control procedures indicate loss of performance with the laboratory instruments or methods and monitor results.
  11. To communicate patient results by telephone.
  12. To report any instance or event that may cause a service delivery failure to the laboratory management team.

Scientific

  1. To lead and undertake method and laboratory instrument evaluation in collaboration with laboratory management.
  2. To initiate and participate in research and development in collaboration with laboratory management.

Diagnostic

  1. To use interpretive skills to determine the pathogenic and clinical significance of results of laboratory tests, concentration and attention to detail are essential to these processes and form the greater part of the working day.

  • authorisation of results
  • ordering relevant follow-up laboratory procedures
