Job summary

The Role

Oakdale is developing a new Prescribing Service for children and adults who have a diagnosis of ADHD. As such, Oakdale is looking for a Nurse Practitioner / Non-Medical Prescriber specialising in ADHD within Oakdales neurodevelopmental pathway. In this role, you will be responsible for conducting medication reviews and making independent prescribing decisions for service users with ADHD, under the guidance of a Consultant Psychiatrist. You will play a crucial role in supporting the neurodevelopmental team, working with both young people and adults. Your responsibilities will include initiating medication and providing continuous monitoring to ensure the best possible outcomes for service users.

Main duties of the job

  • Facilitate discussions about ADHD treatment options effectively across various age groups.

  • Prescribe controlled drugs and other medications appropriately, adhering to NICE guidelines, ensuring treatments are tailored to the individual needs of each service user.

  • Maintain expertise in the pharmacokinetic profiles of both short- and long-acting ADHD medications, adjusting treatments to minimise adverse effects and maximise efficacy.

  • Conduct initial assessments to review mental health, social circumstances, and physical health of service users.

  • Generate and manage prescriptions using approved formularies, with ongoing monitoring and review to ensure effectiveness, safety, and appropriateness of the prescribed interventions.

  • Coordinate and provide comprehensive medication management, including necessary physical health checks and monitoring.

  • Support the transition of ADHD medication prescribing and monitoring to primary care through knowledge of Shared Care Protocol arrangements.

  • Contribute to governance and audit processes, ensuring service delivery prioritises quality and upholds dignity, privacy, and respect for all service users.

  • Provide accurate and timely performance data on service activities as required.

  • Ensure compliance with local policies such as Yellow Card reporting, monitoring MHRA drug safety updates, and addressing adverse drug reactions through appropriate reporting and remedial actions.

The Role

The team currently works with young people and adults who have had some of the longest waits for neurodevelopmental assessment. Your role will be to support the neurodevelopmental team, initiating medication and providing ongoing monitoring.

You will need to hold an independent and supplementary non-medical prescribing qualification and will have experience of working in a specialist ADHD service / with adults or children with ADHD.

The role also involves:

  • Working within a multidisciplinary team environment including psychology and consultant psychiatry to provide a specialist clinical assessment and intervention ADHD service to children, young people, their families and adults where discussions about treatment options for ADHD are effectively facilitated.

  • Writing prescriptions for controlled drugs and other medications where appropriate, in line with NICE guidance, ensuring;

    • Treatment is tailored effectively to the individual needs of the child, young person or adult

    • Familiarity with the pharmacokinetic profiles of all the short- and long-acting preparations available for ADHD, taking account of relevant variations to avoid reduced effect or excessive adverse effects.

  • Providing initial assessments to review mental health, social circumstances and physical health

  • Generating prescriptions using appropriate prescribing formularies and monitoring and reviewing thereafter regarding the effectiveness, continued appropriateness and safety of the prescribing intervention.

  • Providing and coordinating medication management, which may include appropriate physical health checks and monitoring.

  • Supporting the transfer of prescribing and monitoring of ADHD medication to primary care sector through knowledge of Shared Care Protocol arrangements
