Job summary
The GP Assistant role is a key part of the clinical team, working closely with GPs to improve patient flow, enhance the quality of consultations, and support safe, efficient care delivery. This is a varied and rewarding role that combines hands-on clinical support with important administrative responsibilities, offering excellent exposure to primary care.
In this role, you will:

Act as a central link between patients, GPs, and the wider healthcare team.

Prepare patients ahead of consultations by taking brief histories and basic observations.

Carry out clinical tasks such as ECGs, phlebotomy, urinalysis, wound care and immunisations.

Support GPs by managing clinical correspondence, prioritising tasks, and assisting with workflow and pathology results.

Arrange appointments, referrals, tests and follow-ups to ensure continuity of care.

Accurately code and update patient records, and complete basic forms for GP review.

Main duties of the job
This role supports GPs and the wider clinical team by helping consultations run efficiently and ensuring patients receive safe, timely and well-coordinated care. The postholder works at the interface between patients, clinicians and administrative systems, contributing to improved patient flow, safety and experience.

Preparing patients ahead of consultations and supporting GPs during clinics so they can focus on clinical decision-making.
