Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and flexible staff nurse to become part of our team at MKUCS. This is an exciting opportunity for a band 5 nurse to progress and develop their nursing become a skill staff nurse in urgent care, particularly within the field of minor illness and minor injury treatments and navigation. We will offer you guidance, support and encouragement. This post invovles 12 hour day and night shifts.

The successful applicant should be a registered nurse. You will need a high degree of enthusiasm and drive to develop as a clinician and work with the team to gain the necessary knowledge and experience to achieve within urgent care. You will provide and promote the highest possible standard of care based on professionally determined standards. You will participate as an effective practitioner within MKUCS demonstrating effective team work and providing good morale within the department.

Main duties of the job

- Participate in the initial assessment of patients attending MKUCS to navigate the patients to the most appropriate care, book in and complete the NEWS2 and POPS scoring including those presenting with complex conditions.

- Establish a safe working environment for patients and staff and ensure that patient contact and dignity are compromised as little as possible.

- Take responsibility for a patient within an area of the department for example: wounds and treatments.

- Carry out wound closure by means of suture / steri-strip and gluing including infiltration of wounds and local anaesthetic.

- Act upon concerns regarding child and adult safeguarding within agreed protocols, trust policies and legislation.

- Maintain appropriate documentation profiles, care plans and electronic records.

- Participate in the care of critically ill/deteriorating patients.

- Perform venepuncture, ECGs, Urinalysis and other baseline examinations.

- Arrange, co-ordinate and participate in safe hospital transfer of patients, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care.

- Undertake daily checks of Urgent Care Centre equipment, and report any faults to relevant department or person.

About us

We provide urgent care to adults and children from birth. Patients present either by a self-referral, a bookable appointment via 111 or conveyed by ambulance.

We see and manage a wide range of Minor illness and injuries and transfer acutely unwell and significant injuries to the appropriate specialist units.

Offer professional co-operation to medical / support staff in solving care related problems and carry out treatment as instructed to deliver quality care.

Participate in the change process to meet future needs of the service.

Assist in maintenance of stock levels of all clinical equipment, drugs and supplies and order as necessary.

Contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation within the trust essence of the care programme.

Be aware of procedure for complaints from relatives, patients and staff and inform the line manager of any untoward incidents and participate in the clinical incident reporting process.

Co-ordinate the arrival and departure of patients in accordance with local policy, incorporating escort of patients, where applicable.

Actively seek to utilise all resources effectively

Be responsible for delegation to Health Care Assistants and pre-registration students of duties in accordance with the individuals knowledge and experience. Give support to new starters in MKUCS

Clinical Governance

Communication

Communicate with patients, visitors and colleagues by telephone, face to face, in writing or electronically to ensure the effective running of the service. This can be both complex and sensitive including children and patients with special needs.

Provide support for patients / relatives in highly emotional distressed state including and patients with special needs.

Provide information and advice of the follow up process.

Provide safe and competent management of members of the public who may be violent, aggressive or under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Co-operate and communicate with members of the multi-disciplinary team and other agencies, sensitive information concerning a patients medical condition within the constraints of data protection.

Participate in regular staff meetings, 1:1s and appraisals.

Ensure that important information relating to the patients physical condition or which would affect the nursing care, is relayed to the appropriate personnel.

Conducts self professionally and according to policy during distressing / emotional circumstances when dealing with patients, relatives and visitors.

Education and Development

Attend mandatory training and reviews as per local policy.

Participate in the development review process and achieve objectives

Maintain Professional Portfolio

Assist in the training, when required of new appointed staff nurses, pre-registration students and Health care assistants.

Participate in clinical audit and trials.
