Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Ophthalmic Theatre Nurse / Operating Department Practitioner to join our Theatre Team at Probus Surgical Centre. The ideal candidate will have experience in a scrub role, must be RGN or ODP qualified, have a valid NMC or HCPC registration and have post-registration experience.
Experience in a surgical nursing environment is essential with ophthalmic experience in either surgery or pre-operative nursing being desirable. Working in this pressured environment as part of a close-knit multidisciplinary team, you will know that this role requires high levels of focus and engagement. Probus Surgical Centre has been providing NHS specialist day case surgery under local anaesthetic in a primary healthcare setting since 1995.
Probus Surgical Centre carries out over 6,000 NHS procedures each year. The centre is within the Probus GP Surgery approximately midway between Truro and St. Austell. Parking is easy in our free car park which overlooks far reaching views of beautiful Cornish countryside.

Main Responsibilities and Duties
- To prepare patients for theatre including pre-operative support and ensuring that patients are comfort and mentally prepared for surgery.
- Ensure that each patient has been assessed and that their care is delivered appropriate to their identified needs.
- To ensure patient safety, comfort and dignity is maintained throughout their journey through their treatment pathway.
- Supervise unqualified staff and assist in induction training of new staff.
- Communicate effectively and clearly with patients and their carers/advocates, surgeons, other nursing colleagues, members of the multi-disciplinary team and relatives at all times.
- Contact and involve patients through providing pre and post operative information in relation to their surgery and/or treatment.
- Provide advice and information to patients as required to ensure their understanding of their treatment.
- Issuing Medication as per surgeons guidance.
- Providing clinical advice to patients queries.
- Recording clinical notes in our patient administration system.
- Ensure all documentation is accurate, always completed in good time and complies with the standards laid down by NMC / HCPC.
- Prepare the operating theatre ensuring all areas are clean and tidy. Prepare all equipment and surgical sets in readiness for the planned operating list.
- Ensure all theatres are re-stocked as necessary.
- Ensure all equipment is sent to CSSD for sterilisation following the completion of each surgical list.
- Ensure that the operating theatre is cleaned following each procedure.
- Ensure the safe disposal of sharps and sharps bins following correct procedure.
- When assisting the surgeons ensure full aseptic technique is maintained and followed at all times.
- Ensure all administrative tasks including stock ordering is carried out in a timely and accurate manner.
