Job summary

To provide leadership, guidance and teaching thus ensuring a safe, effective environment for patients and staff in the day surgery unit.

To be responsible for the management and delivery of all aspects of patient care needs and the implementation and evaluation of care with ward and recovery areas.

To lead, develop and maintain safe and effective standard of care using research and evidence based practice.

To facilitate education within a positive learning environment and manage a designated team.

Main duties of the job

To plan, implement, deliver and evaluate care in accordance with unit policies and procedures.

To act as a role model, offering leadership to co-ordinate, motivate and support team members.

To co-ordinate and implement the setting and monitoring of standards, supervising clinical procedures and taking any necessary action to promote safe and competent practice.

To exercise leadership skills to create a suitable and safe environment for a happy, efficient and co-ordinated team.

To accept responsibility for the safe storage, checking, witnessing and administration of controlled drugs and medicines in accordance with unit policy.

To identify nursing problems or needs and liaise with other members of staff.

Facilitate and manage patient assessment in accordance with unit policy.

Participate in appropriate out-patient clinics as required.

Give post operative support and advice for patients.

To ensure self-motivation and personal professional development and updated knowledge and practice in line with local and national recommendations and statutory requirements.

Liaise with community and physiotherapy services where appropriate.

Participate in post-operative follow up were appropriate.

Ensure staff have appropriate skills to undertake clinical duties and assess and organise training as required.

To assist in managing the Day Surgery Unit in accordance with unit policies.

To organise staff deployment within the unit including duty rosters to cover the needs of all clinical areas.

To assist and support the theatre lead in the effective management of the department and to take charge in his/her absence.

Assist with the induction and teaching of new and temporary staff in accordance with unit policy.

Ensure departmental documentation is completed as required.

Assist with control and requisition of supplies.

Liaise with schedulers ensuring clinics and operating lists are booked appropriately and efficiently.

To be cost aware and develop and encourage financial awareness in other staff, critically examining practice and procedures.

To participate in the evaluation of new supplies and equipment.

To ensure all staff have a clear understanding of their role and relationship within the team and unit.

Plan and implement probationary reviews and performance appraisals according to the unit procedures.

To review and update patient information literature.

Participate in reviewing and updating unit policies.

Liaise with consultants and GPs and act in a co-operative and professional manner.

Liaise with other departments and services in a co-operative manner.

Actively participate in quality assurance audit.

Attend and contribute to relevant Unit and staff meetings.

Ensure staff are informed and updated regarding developments and encourage their participation in problem solving and decision making.

Promote a positive learning environment, sharing knowledge and encouraging application of research with the clinical environment.

Participate in the strategic development of the unit through contribution to new practices and policy initiatives.
