Job summary

As Bank Pre & Post Op Registered Nurse / Practitioner, you will be Working in accordance with IHGs values, the NMC or HCPC codes of professional conduct, and IHG policies and procedures, the Theatre Practitioner will provide high quality nursing care and treatment to patients within the operating theatre department and clinics.

Independent Health Group conducts business between Monday - Friday, with no weekend or bank holiday working.

Main duties of the job

As a registered practitioner, to deliver high quality clinical patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.

To assist with triage and pre-operative assessment of patients undergoing Local Anaesthetic for Hernia, Carpal Tunnel, Cataract, Vasectomy and Podiatry procedures.

To work closely with the Patient Administration Team, Clinicians and Clinical Nursing Teams, to ensure excellent safe patient preparation for surgery and a seamless patient journey through the patient pathway.

There is scope within this role to undertake patient facing clinical duties including admission and discharging of patients on the day of surgery.

Pre-operative Practitioner assesses, plans, delivers and evaluates day surgery nursing care to the highest standards.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

Undertake nursing assessment of the patient to ensure optimal fitness for surgery, some under supervision if required. Ensuring patients are fully informed of the planned treatment, including post-operative care and instructions.

The post holder will work autonomously within their scope of practice, following the NICE, national and local organisational guidelines.

The post holder will manage a caseload and prioritise to facilitate an efficient service.

To assist the referral team in triaging patients within IHG and CCG criteria.

To undertake telephone pre-operative assessment of patients, ensuring they are fit and suitable for surgery on the date allocated, taking an active part in developing the pre-assessment process to be nurse-led where appropriate.

To act as a resource for the understanding of the care pathway, to ensure completion of accurate information and assessment.

To act as the patient advocate at all times throughout the patient pathway. To recognise the significance of any observations made and use those to highlight situations which may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the patient, and to ensure all test results are available for the day of surgery.

To provide information about the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative process, ensuring the patient understands the proposed procedure and any specific instructions.

Monitor and report on patient conditions to the medical staff, ensuring all members of the health care team are kept informed of the changing needs of the patient.

To assist in the planning and Continuous of post-operative patient care by liaising with other Primary Care providers.

Undertake post-operative and follow up calls to the patients and manage the daily call list.

Be responsible for conducting virtual pre-operative and post-operative assessments, ensuring patients are adequately prepared for surgery and follow-up care remotely.

Responsible for monitoring patient progress virtually, including managing electronic patient records and ensuring timely follow-ups

To be responsible for the keeping of accurate and confidential records, for patients and staff.

Can manage themselves, and their workload, both individually and as a team member.

To support the development of the Nurse led pre-assessment and post-operative clinics, using appropriate information systems and ensuring compliance with best practice, within an appropriate framework, i.e. NMC / HCPC scope of Professional Practice.

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care as part of a collaborative programme of patient care.

To deliver high quality patient care, which is clinically effective, evidence based and appropriate.

To participate in integrated governance and risk assessment activities, reporting these as required.

To report clinical incidents and complete all associated documentation as required.

Support the Governance Team with any CQUIN reporting relevant to the role.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that best use is made of all resources. To consider cost and service improvement but ensuring high quality care is maintained.

To participate in the clinical governance agenda and support the audit process within own area. To participate in reviewing and enhancing standards of care

Promote clinical innovations and encourage evidence-based practices.

Infection Prevention and Control is everybodys responsibility. All staff are required to adhere to the Trusts Infection Prevention and Control policy and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection prevention and control at all times.

Possess a comprehensive understanding of general surgical procedures and their pre- and post-operative care requirements.
