Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Accountant to join our Central team, based in Plymouth. Working as part of our central team, you will provide management accounting support to PDSE budget holders and management team. You will prepare financial information advice to enable PDSE to operate effectively, ensuring that the information provided is accurate, timely and to appropriate accounting standards.

Main duties of the job

PDSE is a subsidiary of the University of Plymouth and so the role holder will work closely with the universitys finance team.

We provide NHS treatment and outreach services to local communities in Devon and Cornwall and we work closely with the University of Plymouths Peninsula Dental School to support the clinical education of its dental healthcare students.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The role includes:

Production of monthly management accounts with accompanying commentary for the senior management team

Support in the updating of annual and long-term forecasts in line with the planning cycle for approval by the PDSE management team and board

Provide information as requested for internal and external auditors

Prepare and process month end journals

Process purchase orders and staff expenses

Monitoring accounts receivable and payable functions

Responsible for the review of monthly payroll

Preparing pension returns and annual returns where required by scheme

Support in providing financial information and advice to PDSEs management and responsible budget holders

Support budget holders in managing their budgets through provision of reports and advice, discussing financial issues, suggesting alternative options and negotiating corrective action

Carry out variance analysis of the monthly management accounts and prepare the narrative around these variances

Provide costings to the PDSE team for various projects and initiatives

Supporting with preparation of reports to the PDSE Board on financial performance

Follow the appropriate financial and regulatory policies and procedures ensuring necessary regulations and standards are adhered to

Support the continuous development of PDSEs finance strategy using information and understanding of the business and emerging needs to ensure service delivery continues to be fit for purpose

Liaise with the University of Plymouth finance department to assist in the accurate reporting of financial information.

Measures of Success:

Successful delivery of key priorities and objectives agreed with manager and as a result of annual appraisal

Deadlines for key finance and other statutory or regulatory processes achieved

Positive customer and stakeholder feedback.

Knowledge, Education & Training:

AAT qualified or studying towards professional qualifications (CIMA/ACCA etc) or equivalent work-based experience

Knowledge and awareness of accounting policies and procedures

Excellent numeracy and literacy skills

Computer literate including competence with Microsoft Office and ability to learn specific business systems.

Experience:

Experience of using a finance computer system

Experience of preparing monthly accruals, prepayments and variance analysis

Working in a finance environment

Working independently in a team environment

Working in a professional service environment Skills:

Excellent communication and presentation skills both verbal and written

Attention to detail and accuracy

Proficient in use of Microsoft Excel for data analysis Behaviours:
