Job summary

The Staffordshire General Practice Nurse (GPN) Foundation School provides a structured, supported pathway into General Practice Nursing across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

This 12-month training programme has been developed in collaboration with NHS England, the Queen's Institute of Community Nursing, and the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent ICS/ICB to create a high-quality, standardised route into primary care nursing.

We are recruiting up to 25 nurses to join our September 2026 cohort.

We welcome applications from:

  • Newly qualified nurses

  • Nurses due to qualify by September 2026

  • Registered nurses seeking to transition into General Practice

Applicants must demonstrate motivation to develop a long-term career in primary care.

Main duties of the job

Employment

  • 12-month fixed-term contract

  • 37.5 hours per week

  • Band 5 salary equivalent (entry point)

  • Employed by GP First Ltd

  • NHS Pension Scheme

  • Seconded to a General Practice within Staffordshire or Stoke-on-Trent

Following successful completion of the programme, we will work with Foundation Nurses and host practices to facilitate progression into a substantive GPN role.

As the programme operates across multiple sites, the ability to travel between university, training and placement locations is essential.

Education & Training

During the programme you will:

  • Attend university one day per week to complete the Fundamentals in General Practice Nursing (FGPN)

  • Participate in weekly Foundation School sessions (clinical supervision, leadership development and peer learning)

  • Undertake supervised clinical practice within your host General Practice

The FGPN leads to a 60-credit postgraduate certificate and is aligned to the Primary Care and General Practice Nursing Career & Core Capabilities Framework (2022).

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Purpose of the Role

This is a 12-month fixed-term trainee General Practice Nurse post combining supervised clinical practice within General Practice, weekly academic study (FGPN), and participation in the Staffordshire GPN Foundation School.

The post holder will develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to practise safely and effectively as a qualified General Practice Nurse.

2. Programme Requirements

The post holder must:

  • Attend university one day per week to complete the Fundamentals in General Practice Nursing (FGPN)

  • Attend weekly Foundation School sessions (currently delivered face-to-face in Stafford)

  • Participate fully in supervised clinical practice within the host practice

  • Maintain NMC registration throughout employment

  • Be able to travel between university, training and placement sites

The first six months of employment constitute a probationary period.

3. Professional Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Practise in accordance with the NMC Code

  • Work within scope of competence and seek supervision appropriately

  • Maintain continuing professional development

  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams

  • Apply evidence-based practice to clinical decision-making

  • Contribute to quality improvement and service development initiatives

4. Clinical Responsibilities

(All elements are developed progressively during the programme under supervision)

The post holder will:

  • Deliver safe, evidence-based patient care

  • Develop competence in Long Term Condition management

  • Administer immunisations and injections under PSD/PGD (following training)

  • Contribute to vaccination programmes

  • Undertake opportunistic screening

  • Learn cervical cytology

  • Provide health promotion and personalised care

  • Apply safeguarding policies and local referral procedures

  • Maintain infection prevention and control standards

  • Manage emergency presentations within competence

  • Maintain annual resuscitation and anaphylaxis competencies

  • Support achievement of quality indicators and contractual targets

5. Education & Training Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Engage fully in academic study and supervised practice

  • Participate in peer support, supervision and preceptorship

  • Complete mandatory training

  • Participate in appraisal

  • Contribute to maintaining high professional standards

6. Accountability & Supervision

The post holder is professionally accountable for their practice as an NMC registrant and must maintain current registration.

Clinical supervision will be provided by an experienced General Practice Nurse. A learning agreement will be in place between the post holder and supervising practice.

Medical indemnity is provided via the Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice.

7. Governance & Professional Standards

The post holder is required to:

  • Comply with health and safety legislation

  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to GDPR requirements

  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records

  • Report risks, incidents and near misses appropriately
