Job summary

The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) is seeking two exceptional clinical academics to join its PET Centre and Research Departments at Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). Each post-holder will play a major role in the clinical, academic and teaching work of the School and will be responsible to the Head of the PET Centre (Prof Alexander Hammers) and Head of the Research Department of Imaging, Chemistry & Biology (ICAB, Prof Stephen Archibald). Clinically, they will be accountable to the PET Centre Clinical Lead and Clinical Directors of the GSTT Clinical Imaging & Medical Physics Directorate. They will be responsible, together with consultant colleagues, for the provision of PET imaging services to patients referred by GSTT and other NHS Trusts and Healthcare Providers.

This is a full-time post (40 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

Main duties of the job

This is clinical academic role specialising in PET Imaging, and the post-holder will be expected to drive research projects that link with the Schools objectives. Clinical responsibilities will include provision of high-quality care for patients requiring PET scans (~8000 patients in 2024), including direct supervision of lists, providing support and training to a multi-disciplinary team, and reporting complex scans independently and to a high standard. The post-holder will be part of the PET leadership team and will be expected to contribute to the management and development of the clinical service and research programme. Academic responsibilities will include the oversight of a portfolio of clinical trials and research studies in the capacity of Principal Investigator (PI), and the training and teaching of clinical research fellows integral to the Academic Research Programme between GSTT and KCL. In particular, the post-holder will develop an academic programme in PET, centred on topics of unmet need, such as TBP imaging for cancer diagnosis, theragnostics, systems biology, advanced metabolic imaging, new radiopharmaceutical development and cell tracking, including dynamic imaging and kinetic analysis, and will develop a viable and sustainable programme of work using the Schools facilities.

About us

The Kings College London and Guys & St Thomas PET Centre is one of the leading clinical PET centres in the UK with a large and varied clinical service and a substantial and expanding research track record. Our work includes carrying out clinically related and basic research with collaborators from the Hospital, the Medical School and other institutions as well as providing a clinical PET service for patients under the NHSE PET II national contract and. We currently scan over 8,000 patients annually, with reporting done in house by our consultants and a small team of clinical research fellows. Facilities include a cyclotron and radiochemistry facility for production of routine clinical and research radiotracers (with around 3 new radiopharmaceuticals being added per year. The scanning facility comprises 2 new Siemens Quadra long axial field-of-view (Total Body) PET (TBP) scanners (St Thomas), making us one of only two centres in the world with this capability, a Siemens Biograph PET-CT scanner (Guys Cancer) and a Siemens mMR simultaneous PET-MR scanner (St Thomas).

Be actively involved in the on-going research within the School of BMEIS, Research Department of ICAB and other School Research Departments, including obtaining required Regulatory approvals when required

Contribute to the further development of the PET and ICAB research programmes, including leading the development of a viable programme of work in relation to Total Body PET imaging.

Be expected to attract substantive grant funding to support a research group, as per current KCL Academic Research Framework.

Have the opportunity to develop and lead clinical trials testing PET risk adapted therapy in lymphoma and other cancers as part of the KCL PET international research programme through the UK PET core lab team which co-ordinates a network of 50 UK imaging centres based at St Thomas Hospital.

Assist other researchers within the School of BMEIS and other research departments in achieving their ambitions.

Be required to provide teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Head of the Research Department of ICAB or Head of School.

May be required to act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Heads of the PET Centre, Research Departments or School to ensure external accreditation of training posts.

Be expected to contribute to the training and support of doctors/radiographers in training, and to supervise visiting fellows to the School of BMEIS and support their educational needs to achieve their desired accreditation levels.

Clinical Service Delivery

The post-holder will fulfil the following clinical commitments:

Support to PET imaging lists and high quality reporting of images on weekly basis, maintaining reporting rates in line with clinical lead and Departmental expectations.

Diagnosis of patients referred to GSTT and partner trusts.

Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, junior staff.

Clinical management of inpatients and outpatients of the PET services.

To participate in the weekly Multi-Disciplinary Meetings relevant to PET which also serve as a teaching session and review session for interesting/complex cases.

To be flexible to provide a high-quality service for patients accessing the service during usual hours of operation (includes evenings and some weekends)

To liaise as required with other imaging teams to optimise pathways for patients.

To work with medical, Allied Health Professional (AHP), nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high quality performance against clinical and financial Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

All staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development, and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas as part of their annual appraisal.

Work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and service developments as delegated by the Clinical Director, Clinical Lead or senior management teams.

Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas.
