Job summary

Are you a skilled clinician ready to apply your nursing expertise to the frontline of medical research? Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of life-threatening infection worldwide, and with the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the need for new preventive strategies is urgent.

Main duties of the job

You will provide high-quality clinical care and research delivery within a dedicated multidisciplinary team. Working closely with Dr Dinesh Aggarwal and Professor Chris Chius experienced human challenge team, you will:

Champion the participant journey: Act as the primary point of contact for volunteers, managing their experience from screening and recruitment through to enrolment and follow-up, ensuring they feel informed, supported, and valued throughout.

Deliver clinical excellence: Assist with the unique bacterial inoculation procedures (including suturing and biopsy assistance) and perform essential clinical skills, including phlebotomy and wound management, to the highest standards.

Ensure participant safety: Closely monitor participants during their inpatient stay in our dedicated quarantine facility, identifying and reporting adverse events promptly to ensure their wellbeing.

Drive data collection: Collect a wide range of microbiological and host samples and maintain accurate clinical documentation and electronic data records in line with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards.

Collaborate across disciplines: Work as part of a supportive team of nurses, doctors, and scientists, assisting with the wider portfolio of controlled human infection models when required to ensure successful study delivery.

Job responsibilities

Direct Clinical & Participant Care

Support smooth study delivery: recruit, screen and enrol participants into clinical studies of Staphylococcus aureus.

Act as a primary point of contact for study participants, providing clear guidance, support, and reassurance throughout their enrolment.

Take detailed clinical histories and collect highquality samples following enrolment including phlebotomy, microbiological sampling from various participant sites, and assist with surgical/dermatological procedures.

Guide participants through study procedures, ensuring excellent communication and participant experience.

Monitor participants during study visits and inpatient stays, ensuring their wellbeing and quickly escalating concerns to study physicians.

Identify, record, and report adverse events promptly to maintain participant safety.

Prepare for and undertake clinical study visits within the Imperial College Research Facility (ICRF).

Participant Recruitment & Study Delivery

  • Recruit, screen, and enrol volunteers, ensuring all inclusion/exclusion criteria are met.
  • Explain study procedures clearly, ensuring participants feel informed, comfortable, and valued.
  • Support volunteers through every stage of the study journey - from first contact to followup.

Clinical Data & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and highquality clinical documentation in medical/research notes.
  • Enter and manage clinical data and case report forms in line with GCP, GDPR, and data protection standards.
  • Help maintain secure storage and backup of participant information in line with College, Sponsor and NHS policies.

Operational & Team Support

  • Work closely with the Senior Research Nurse and Project Manager to ensure smooth day-to-day running of the research delivery, including development and refinement of study processes, SOPs and participant-focused pathways.
  • Contribute to recruitment progress of participants, including recruitment strategies and communication with participants.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team within Dr Aggarwals wider group and provide support to colleagues when needed.
  • Collaborate with the research nursing team of Prof Chiu to support the wider portfolio of controlled human infection models when needed.

Training & Professional Development

  • Keep up to date with clinical research standards, skin and soft tissue infection knowledge, and national regulations.
  • Attend training, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain NMC registration and uphold all aspects of the Code of Professional Conduct.

Additional Duties

  • Carry out administrative tasks appropriate for a Band 6 role.
  • Adhere to College and NHS policies and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • As an Agenda for Change post, continue NHS career and pension progression while holding an honorary clinical contract aligned to your experience.
